;OF THE DRUIDS.I3f^<strong>the</strong> forts in question are all <strong>of</strong> ^vl'onght stone, and<strong>of</strong>ten <strong>of</strong> such large stones, asno number <strong>of</strong> mencou'd ever raise to <strong>the</strong> places <strong>the</strong>y occupy, without<strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> engines; which engines are quite unknownto <strong>the</strong> present inhabitants, and to <strong>the</strong>ir ancestorsfor many ages past. There's none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>lesser iles, but has one fort at least, and <strong>the</strong>y arecommonly in sight <strong>of</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r: but <strong>the</strong> Dim inSt. Kilda (for so <strong>the</strong>y call <strong>the</strong> old fort <strong>the</strong>re) isabout 18 leagues distant from North Uist, and 20from <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> Lewis or Harries, toonly in a very fair day like a blewish mist:be seenbut alarge fire <strong>the</strong>re wou'd be visible at night, as <strong>the</strong>ascending smoak by day. In this same He <strong>of</strong>Lewis (where are many such Duns) <strong>the</strong>re's north<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Brago, a round fort compos'd <strong>of</strong>huge stones, and three stories high :that is, it hasthree hollow passages one over ano<strong>the</strong>r, within aprodigious thick wall quite round <strong>the</strong> fort, withmany windows and stairs. I give this onely asan example from Dr, Martin, an eye-witness, who,with several o<strong>the</strong>rs, mention many more suchelsewhere:yet (which is a great neglect) withoutacquainting us with <strong>the</strong>ir dimensions, whe<strong>the</strong>rthose passages in <strong>the</strong> wall be arch'd, or with manysuch things relating to <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workand omitting certain o<strong>the</strong>r circumstiuices, no lessnecessary to be known.
