To such pitifullengths will the rancour of party-spirit drive men,when they are determined to calumniate with, orwithout, reason.In the beginning of 1701, he published TheArt of Goveriwig hy Parties, which he dedicatedto King William the 3d ; and, about the sametime, published a pamphlet, in quarto, entitled*Propositionsfor uniting the two East India Companies,In March following, the lower and upper houseof convocation, with the concurrence of the bishops,resolved to proceed against Mr. Toland'sChristianity not Mysterious, and his Amyntor,with all possible rigour.After passing some resolutionsagainst these books, they found tlieycould not proceed without a licence from theking. Rather than solicit this boon, they droppedtheir proceedings against Mr. Toland. Canany circumstance speak more strongly in the vindicationof Mr. Toland? Can any thing shew tlieinnocence of our author, in a clearer })oint of view,than that the whole united Englisli hierarchy,durst not solicit a licence from the king to prosecutehim, because they were sure it would be refused?This circumstance affords more than apresumption, that Mr. Tolancls principal crimes,in the eyes of his enemies, were his predilection forpresbyterianism, and attachment to King William.
Be that as itLIFE OF TOLAND. 27may, when on the death of theduke of Gloucester, an act was passed m June,1701, for the better securing the protestant successionto the crow n,Mr. Toland published hisAnglia Libera; or, The Limitation and Successionof the Croivn of England Explained and Asserted;as grounded on his majesty s speech ; the proceedingsof parliament; the desires of the people; thesafety of our religion; the nature of our constitutio7i;the balance of Europe; and^ the rights ofmankind. This treatise he dedicated to his patron,the duke of New castle.The king having sent the earl of Macclesfield toHanover, with the act of succession, Mr. Tolandaccompanied him, and presented his Anglia Liberato her electoral highness the Princess Sophia;and was the first who had the honour of kneelingand kissing her hand, on account of the act ofsuccession.The earl of Macclesfield recommendedhim warmly to her highness.Mr. Toland staidthere five or six weeks, and at his departure, theirhighnesses the electress dow ager, and the elector,presented him with several gold medals, as aprincely remuneration forthe book he had writtenabout the succession, in defence of their titleand family. Her highness condescended to givehim likewise portraits of herself, the elector, theyoung prince, and of her majesty the queen ofPrussia, done in oil colours.
