—'——S60NOTES.conicis) says,— " the Pyrrichians have in their country the tern, pie of Diana Astratea, and the reason why they called her sowas, because the army of the Amazons stopped there, and wentno farther." This is another instance of Grecian vanity andabsurdity, to derive the Phoenician Astarte from the GreekAlpha privative, and Siratos, an army. Most unfortunately allthe ancient deities, or at least by far the greater part of them, have passed to us through the medium of the Greek and Romanlanguages, and are so mutilated and distorted, as hardly to berecognized. When stript of this disguise, the Celtic deities areTaram (Tliunder)— Eas, or Es, a Cataract—the name of theirgod of war, Teutat, Heat, an epithet of the sun, and the samewith the Taaut of the Phoenicians, mentioned by Sanchoniathon^and the Teuiat of the Egyptians, mentioned by Cicero Bealan^or Aballa (names of the sun) Onvana (the sea) Ogmadh(learned, a name of Hercules)—and Astarte (the moon, thesame as the Astarte of Sanchoniathon.) Hence it is evident thatthe Celtic mythology has overstepped that of the Greeks andRomans, and is more ancient than either. Teutat and Astarteare strictly Phoenician, though the Greeks claim the first underthe name oi Mercurius Trismegitus, and the last under the nameof Adrastea, Astratea, Astroarche, Juno, Diana, Sec, Beat isalso a Phoenician deity. Ahalla (pronounced Apalla) I have ina former note shewn to be the radis of the Greek Apollon, andthe Roman Apollo. As to Eas, Taram, Ogmadh, and Onvana, they are so peculiarly Celtic, that no other nation has venturedto claim them, though the Romans have added Taramis to theirJupiter, Not one Celtic deity is of Greek or Roman origin, though their chief deitjes, as well as their religious rites, can bedemonstrated to be Phoenician. It is therefore historic truth, that the Celts are more ancient than the Greeks, and that theymigrated from Asia to Europe, before Greece had even a name, and were in fact (which is now generally allowed) the Aborigi.3iesof Europe,
