42 LIFE OF TOLAND.Mr. <strong>Toland's</strong> belief, that he will never he <strong>the</strong> sameToland, after <strong>the</strong> resurrection, is not heterodox,though his enemies have not failed to represent itin this light. The gospel uniformly declares, thata considerable change will take place in <strong>the</strong> humanbody at <strong>the</strong> resurrection, and that we shall all bechanged. Mr.Toland must, <strong>the</strong>refore, not be consideredas here denying his absolute future identity,but merely as alluding to that partial change which<strong>the</strong> scriptures so clearly point out.Hi<strong>the</strong>rto I have almost implicitly followed *M.Maizeuz, and, as far as <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> this abstract^vould admit, have adopted his own words, beingAveil aware, that by so doing, no body will accuseme <strong>of</strong> partiality to Mr. Toland. M. Maizeuz wasa Frenchman, a friend to popery and arbitrarypower; he did not undertake our author's biographyvoluntarily,nor from any motive <strong>of</strong> respect.On <strong>the</strong> contrary, when requested by afriend <strong>of</strong> our author's (who was at <strong>the</strong> same time<strong>the</strong> Frenchman's benefactor), to undertake <strong>the</strong>task, he positively declined it. A second request,mdre peremptory than <strong>the</strong> first, had <strong>the</strong> desiredeffect. M. Maizeuz has not, in one single instance,made <strong>the</strong> slightest allusion to <strong>the</strong> complexion <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> limes in which Mr. Toland lived, without aknowledge <strong>of</strong> which, it is impossible duely to appreciateei<strong>the</strong>r his principles, or <strong>the</strong> scope <strong>of</strong> hiswritings.
