ever cheerful,THE HISTORYand having a strong inclination tomusic: all which particulars, with the other partsof their past and present character, I have notonely learnt from the concurrent testimonies ofseveral judicious authors; but alô from the intimateknowlege I have had myself of many scoresof the natives, as well in Scotland as elsewhere.They are hospitable beyond expression, intertainingall strangers of what condition soever gratis;the use of mony being still in some of those ilandsunknown, and till a few ages past in all of them.They have no lawyers or attorneys: which, nomore than several other particulars here specify'd,I do not understand of theHighlanders on thecontinent; tho' speaking the same language, andwearing the same dress with them. The men andw omen plead their own causes ; and a very speedydecision is made by the proprietor, who's perpetualpresident in their courts, or by his bailiff ashis substitute.In a word, they are equally void ofthe two chief plagues of mankind, luxuryandambition; which consequentlyf rees them from allthose restless pursuits, consuming toils, and neverfailingvexations, that men suffer elsewhere for thoseairy, trifling, shortliv d vanities.Their contemptof superfluities is falsly reckon'd poverty, sincetheir felicity consists not in having much, but incoveting little; and that he's supremely rich, whowants no more tJian he has:for as they, who liveaccording to nature, will never be poor; so they,
OF THE DRUIDS. 223who live according- to opinion, %vill never be rich.'Tis certain that no body wants, what he doesnot desire :and how much easier is it not to desirecertain things, than otherwise? as it is far morehealthy and happy towant, than to injoy them.Neither is their ignorance of vices in these ilandsany diminution to their virtue, since (not being bytheir situation concerned in any of the disputesabout dominion or commerce, that distract theworld) they are notonely rigid observers ofjustice,but show less propensity than any people to tumults;except what they may be unwarily ledinto by the extraordinary deference they pay tothe opinion of their chiefs and leaders, who areaccountable for the mischiefs they sometimesbring (as at this very time*) on these well-meaningHyperboreans. For Hyperboreans I will nowpresume to call them, and withall to claim Abarisas a philosopher of the Brittish vvôrld,principally occasion'd this di^^rescion ;which hason that accountnot improper, nor, I hope, altogether uselessin other respects. Be this as jour lordship shallthink fit to judge, ! will not finish it before I haveacquainted you with an odd custom or two, thathave from time immemorial obtain'd in Barra andthe lesser circumjacent ilands, which are the propertyof Mac-neil. The present is the thirty-fifthlord of Barra by uninterrupted linealdescent, a* 1719.
