Indeedafter Patric had converted <strong>the</strong> nation, and, for <strong>the</strong>better propagating <strong>of</strong> christian books, introducd<strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman letters, instead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> antientmanner <strong>of</strong> writing, <strong>the</strong>ir primitive letters,very different from those <strong>the</strong>y now use, bagan bydegrees to grow absolete; and at last legible onlyby antiquaries and o<strong>the</strong>r curious men, to whom<strong>the</strong>y stood in as good stead as any kind <strong>of</strong> occultcharacters : whence it happen'd that Ogum, fromj-^ignifying <strong>the</strong> secret qfivriting, came to signify 5^cretwriting, but still principally meaning <strong>the</strong> originalIrish characters.
