The words which characterize the antiquity,the identity, or the affinity of languages, are those whichmark the permanent objects of nature, or the primary wantsand relations of mankind, and which must have existed from thevery first dawn of social intercourse.But least it should be imagined that I wish to evade a directreply to Mr. Innes' argument, I shall here admit, because thewords in the Celtic which signify a letter^ a hook, &c. bear everymark of identity with the Roman Uteia, liber, &c. that St. Patrickintroduced letters, hooks, &c. into Ireland, and then itmust follow that he introduced all things else, whose names bearthe same marks of identity.
