32 LIFE OF TOLAND.tin, by one Cardinal Matthew, in 1514, gave it toMr. Toland, who edited it, both in English andLatin: along with other violent expressions,it contains the following, Gallorum Ufigues jionresecandos, sed penltus evellendos esse; i. e. Thatthe nails of the French were not to be pared, buttorn out by the roots.Soon after, he published The Elector PalatinsDeclaration, lately published in favour of his protestantsubjects, &c.This Mr. Toland did, at theparticular request of the elector Palatine's minister.In the spring, Mr. Toland went to Germany,and visited Berlin, Hanover, Dusseldorp, Vienna,and Prague in Bohemia. At Dusseldorp, he wasmost graciously received by his electoral highness,who, in consideration of the English pamphlet,published by him, presented him with a gold chainand medal, besides a hundred ducats. FromPrague, he returned to Holland, where he staidtill 1710.In Holland, he published the following dissertations,viz.1st,Adeisidcemon, sive Titus Livius a SuperstitioneVindicatus, Sfc.2do, Origiies Judaica>, Sfc. In the course ofthis dissertation, he animadverterl on Huetiiis' BeonomtratioEvangelica,He ridicules Huetius foraffirming that several eminent persons recorded inthe Old Testament are allegorized in the heatlienmythology; and particluarly Moses under the

Though Mr. Toland was unquestionablyin the right, Huetius was greatly incensed,and expressed his resentment in a letter, first publishedin the Journal of Trevoux, and afterwardsprinted by Abbot Tilladet. It w ill be recollected,that these are the two gentlemen, who endeavouredto convict Mr. Toland of the high and unpardonablecrime, of not directing his parents topropagate him legitimately.In 170.9, he published at Amsterdam, a secondedition of his Philippic against France.In 1710,hepublished, withouthisname, a French])amphlet, relating to Dr. Sacheverell.While in Holland, he had the good fortune toget acquainted with prince Eugene of Savoy, w hogave him several marks of his generosity.After his return to England in 1711, he publishedthe Iliimours of Epsom; and, at the same time,a translation of four of Pliny s Letters,In 1712, he published Imo. A Letter against Popery^written by Sophia Charlotte, late queen ofPrussia. 2 do. Her Majesty's reasonsfor creatingthe electoral prince of Hanover a peer of that realm,3tio.The Grand Mystery laid open; namely, bydividing the protestants, to weaken the Hanoveriansuccession, &c.About the same time, he published a new editionof Cicero s tvorks, an undertaking for w hich he waseminently qualified.
