Diabetic Retinopathy in Type 2 Diabetes in Relation to Risk Factors<br />

Purpose: The aim <strong>of</strong> the study was to examine the diabetic retinopathy and its<br />

relation to various risk factors in type 2 diabetic patients.<br />

Study design: Cross sectional hospital based study.<br />

Methods: Out <strong>of</strong> 165 patients, 154 patients were included in the study. All the<br />

patients underwent clinical examination along with detailed dilated funduscopy<br />

for retinopathy by +70D non contact lens and biochemical examinations<br />

including HbA1c and lipid pr<strong>of</strong>ile.<br />

Results: The study population was 154 [M: F=85:69; Mean age 56.2 ± 10.3<br />

years]. 48 patients [31.2%] had evidence <strong>of</strong> retinopathy with 42 [87.5%] had<br />

non proliferative diabetic retinopathy and 6 had [12.5%] proliferative diabetic<br />

retinopathy.36 patients [75%] had diabetic maculopathy (n=48). 66.6% <strong>of</strong><br />

patients who had diabetic retinopathy with more than 10 years duration <strong>of</strong><br />

diabetes. Increased glycosylated haemoglobin level, presence <strong>of</strong> hypertension<br />

and hyperlipidemia were risk factors <strong>of</strong> diabetic retinopathy (p
