Adaptive Optics in Amblyopia
Rychwalski Paul
Higher order aberrations have been found in the pediatric population. These
can affect visual quality and binocular summation. It is theorized that interocular
differences in higher order aberrations can affect ocular dominance and
possibly cause amblyopia. By using adaptive optics, we attempt to simulate
vision without the presence of the higher order aberrations. This work may
lead to better visual outcomes in a small subset of children who have not
progressed visually despite maximum amblyopia therapy.
Managing the Practice
Panneerselvam Venkatachalam (1)
1. Arasan Eye Hospital
Emerging challenges in ophthalmic practice are
• Varying disease dimensions
• Changing demographics
• Human resources
• Infrastructure
• Technology
• Competition
To manage these, there are no right answers. One should look outside at the
community and identify the unmet need. Experiments and innovations are the
keys to success. The speaker will share his experience in such experiments
and the steps involved in conducting the experiment. Finally the three essential
factors necessary for a successful practice namely, opportunities, competence
and commitment will be discussed.
Big Investment - Big Return
Gaeckle Harald (1)
1. Augenlaserzentrum Neu-Ulm
European practitioners are focused on cataract and refractive procedures,
invest high and procedures are carried out as outpatient cases. In Africa, most
practitioners carry out their eye operations in hospitals. Getting a loan from a
bank in Africa is difficult, so most doctors prefer not to invest. Through transfer
of knowledge and private investments the same performance with European
standards could be achieved especially in African capital cities. An example
from Nairobi, Kenya shows ways how to build and run a clinic together with a
German partner institution.
Eye Care Financing - Community Eye Care Initiative
Ajayi Benedictus (1)
1. Ojulowo Eye Hospital
Accessibility of facilities and cost are the two main barriers to uptake of eye
care services in Nigeria. To redress this situation, community eye care
insurance is being established at Eruwa. Participants are recruited from
established units called wards and encouraged to form eye care cooperatives
managed by primary eye care workers. Each pays $6.50 in return for free eye
care including surgery for the year. This is a pilot study and if successful will be
extended to other areas.
Trachoma
Taylor Hugh (1)
1. Melbourne School of Population Health, The University of Melbourne
Each animal species has evolved with its own chlamydia. Blinding trachoma
came with the early settlements after the last Ice Age. Ur provided epilation
forceps, early Chinese and Egyptian writings mention trachoma and ancient
Greeks and Romans knew it well. The Napoleonic Wars brought trachoma to
prominence in Europe and it spread rapidly in appalling conditions. Attention
on trachoma created ophthalmology as the first medical specialty, the first
specialty eye hospitals and the first International Congress of Ophthalmology
in 1857.
