Advantages <strong>of</strong> Subthreshold Micropulse 577 nm Yellow Laser<br />

Combined with Intravitreal Ranibizumab in Comparison with<br />

Ranibizumab as Monotherapy in Cystoid Macular Edema Secondary<br />

to Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion<br />

Purpose: To compare the efficacy <strong>of</strong> subthreshold micropulse (s.micr.p.) 577<br />

laser photocoagulation and no ophthalmoscopically visible endpoint combined<br />

with intravitreal (IVT) ranibizumab to IVT ranibizumab as monotherapy in the<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> cystoid macular edema (CME) secondary to branch retinal vein<br />

occlusion(BRVO).<br />

Methods: 42 patients(pat.)(42 eyes) with CME due to BRVO. In the control<br />

group (22pat.-22 eyes)laser treatment was performed as monotherapy with<br />

3 consecutive IVT.In the main group (20pat.-20 eyes) modified s.micr.p.laser<br />

treatment with 577 laser was performed in combination with 1 IVT ranibizumab.<br />

Visual acuity(VA),contrast sensitivity, biomicroophthalmoscopy, fundus<br />

photography, fluorescein angiography(FA) and central macular thickness(CMT)<br />

at optical coherence tomography(OCT)were evaluated at baseline,month<br />

1,3,6,12.<br />

Results: 9 months from treatment, the main group: VA increased in 17 eyes<br />

(85%), stable in 2 eyes(10%),worsened 1eye(5%) with respect to baseline. The<br />

control group: VA increased in 16 eyes (73%), stable in 4 eyes(18%),worsened<br />

in 2eyes(9%). Mean CMT according to was 237 µm in the main group, 259<br />

µm in the control group(p=0,05). Regression <strong>of</strong> retinal thickness was achieved<br />

in 19 eyes (95%) in the main group and in 20eyes (90%)<strong>of</strong> the control group<br />
