Interesting Case
Singh Arun (1)
1. Cole Eye Institute
A 30-year-old Caucasian female was noted to have a small, light brown mass
extending into the angle.
See No Touch, Touch No See
Sundar Gangadhara (1)
1. National University Health System
We herewith present an unusual case of Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid in
a 60-year-old male who was presented with multiple lower lid conjunctival
nodules with a past history of ‹chalazion surgery›. Following an incisional
biopsy, systemic work up (MRI, PET-CT) showed metastatic disease requiring
systemic chemotherapy. The presentation of lower eyelid conjunctival nodules
without cutaneous involvement and the presence of metastatic disease at
diagnosi,s as well as an unusual immunohistochemical profile, make this a
unique case.
Cavernous Hemangiomasand of Arteriovenous Communications of
the Retina
Zografos Leonidas (1)
1. Jules Gonin Eye Hospital
Cavernous hemangiomas are rare vascular retina tumors. They can be isolated
or related to the cavernous hemangiomatosis and associated with various
cutaneous and central nervous system vascular malformations. Cavernous
hemangiomas may be localised in the retina or on the optic disc. They have a
distinct clinical presentation and typical fluorescein angiographic pattern. They
are mostly asymptomatic and usually do not need treatment. Arteriovenous
communications may be localised or diffused. Diffused arteriovenous
communications are associated with the Wyburn-Masson Syndrome.
Nonpharmaceutical Treatment of Glaucoma
Ritch Robert (1)
1. New York Eye and Ear Infirmary
Plant extracts have been used medicinally throughout history. Our modern
drugs were originally synthesized from plants used medicinally, including
vitamin C, digitalis, penicillin, and pilocarpine. Many natural compounds show
beneficial effects on circulation, the immune system, mitochondrial function,
and neuroprotection. Some extracts, such as Gingko biloba and curcumin,
have widespread activity on a number of enzyme systems. Some of these
compounds modify expression of enzymes relating to excitotoxicity, apoptosis,
inflammation, lipid peroxidation, or immune stimulation. Some have undergone
clinical trials of their effects on neurodegenerative disorders.
Neuroprotective Effect of an Anti-Aging Chinese Medicine, Wolfberry,
on Glaucoma
So Kwok-fai (1) , Chang Raymond
1. Department of Anatomy, The University of Hong Kong Li Ka Shing Faculty of
Medicine
Anti-aging drugs from Chinese medicinal herbs may be one of the possible
interventions for glaucoma. The fruits of Lycium barbarum (Gou Qi Zi, or
wolfberry), have been used for thousands of years in China and is believed
to be effective as an anti-aging agent as well as nourishment of eyes, livers
and kidneys. We have shown that aqueous extract of wolfberry containing
polysacacharide provides neuroprotection to the retinal ganglion cells against
degeneration in an experimental model of glaucoma.
The Potential Role of Curcumin in Eye Disease
Araie Makoto (1)
1. Kanto Central Hospital
Curcumin is an agent present in the commonly used spice, tumeric. Previous
studies on curcumin demonstrated that it has anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, antiviral,
anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative or pro-apoptotic effects
and suggested it’s potential in the treatment of various systemic diseases.
This presentation aims to review molecular biological mechanisms of curcumin
reportedly relating to curcumin›s beneficial effects on various ocular tissues
including corneal epithelium, lens and retina.
Fish Oil and Fatty Acids in Eye Disease
Fernando Sandra (1)
1. Ross Eye Institute, University of Buffalo
Fish oil, which contains the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), belongs to a group of neuroprotective
compounds that have been widely studied in eye diseases such as macular
degeneration. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to protect photoreceptors
from oxidative stress and promote the survival of retinal pigment epithelial
cells. These compounds may play an important role in the treatment of eye
disease by preventing retinal degeneration, lowering intraocular pressure, and
preventing light-induced toxicity.
Acupuncture in the Treatment of Lower Eyelid Bag
Li-jia Chen
Eyelid bag is a common oculoplastic disorder that requires surgical treatment
when it is big enough to cause cosmetic concern. However, there is no proven
nonsurgical treatment. In our recent pilot study, we have investigated the
effectiveness of acupuncture, which is an essential component of traditional
Chinese medicine, in the treatment of lower eyelid bag in Chinese participants,
and our preliminary results suggest that it is effective. Further large-scale
randomized controlled trials are warranted.
Implementing the ICO/IJCAPHO Core Curriculum for Ophthalmic
Assistants
Astle William (1)
1. Alberta Children›s Hospital
Developing a comprehensive training program and curriculum for ophthalmic
assistants is the foundation to building a knowledgeable and skilled eye care
team. A flexible curriculum model that identifies courses and performance
objectives will be examined. The curriculum model is designed with three levels
of learning for the ophthalmic assistant: introductory, basic, and advanced.
