Relationship between macular ganglion cell complex thickness and<br />

visual acuity in glaucoma patients<br />

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between the thicknesses <strong>of</strong> the<br />

macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC) and the visual acuity in glaucoma.<br />

Methods: One hundred nine eyes <strong>of</strong> 71 consecutive patients with glaucoma<br />

were?studied. The patients with media opacity or retinal disorder besides<br />

glaucoma were excluded from analysis. The mGCC <strong>of</strong> 4 sectors located within<br />

1.5 mm <strong>of</strong> the fovea?(temporal superior, temporal inferior, nasal superior, and<br />

nasal inferior) was measured by Stratus optical coherence tomography RS-<br />

3000 (Nidek, Japan). The relation between best corrected visual acuity and<br />

mean or maximum thicknesses <strong>of</strong> mGCC was evaluated.<br />

Results: The Spearman coefficient values (R) <strong>of</strong> correlation between the best-<br />

corrected vision (logarithm <strong>of</strong> the minimum angle <strong>of</strong> resolution, log MAR) and<br />

the mean and maximum thicknesses <strong>of</strong> mGCC were 0.454 (P
