1. King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital KKESH
Purpose: To describe the clinical spectrum of the Enhanced S-Cone Syndrome/
Goldmann Favre Syndrome with its electroretinography and to describe the
phenotype/ genotype correlations in the Saudi population.
Methods: A prospective study for all patients diagnosed as Goldmann Favre
Syndrome or Enhanced S-Cone Syndrome including: clinical exam,
photography, (OCT) in addition to electrortinography. For the genetic analysis,
a pedigree was done and venous blood samples were drawn from all patients
and their family a therapeutic trial of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAI)
was given, for 12 weeks to determine if this treatment improves VA and/or
decreases the height of the macular schisis.
Result: consanguinity was noted in all patients. A positive family history was
present in (94%). The age of our patients ranged between 5 years and 46
years. 17patients were male (53%) and 15 were female (47%). All patients
complained of night blindness. Nyctalopia started between 2 to 12 years. In
two patients nystagmus was noted (6%). Visual acuity with correction ranged
between 20/25 and counting fingers at 2 feet. Subretinal fibrosis can be seen
and accomative esotropia in children was noted.
Conclusion: Our results show novel mutations and no genotype/phynotype
relation except for subretinal fibrosis.
To Assess the Visual Acuity Threshold at which Patients are
Undergoing Cataract Surgery in Andhra Pradesh (AP) India
1. Andhra Pradesh Right To Sight Society
2. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Governament of Andhra Pradesh
3. L V Pradad Eye Inistitute
Aim: To assess the visual acuity threshold at which patients are undergoing
cataract surgery and to assess visual recovery after cataract surgery in eye
hospitals in Warangal district, AP State, India.
Materials and Methods: A total of 585 subjects were selected in 5 hospitals.
Pre-operative and post-operative visual acuity (VA) was assessed using
Snellen›s visual acuity chart. Sight Restoration Rate (SRR) was calculated.
Results: Of the 585 individuals examined, 66.7% (390) persons were visually
impaired (VI) and 32.8% (192) persons were blind pre-operatively. Of the 585
eyes (subjects) operated 62 eyes had visual acuity 6/6-6/18 (10.6% 95% CI:
8.3-13.4), 417 eyes had VA 6/18 - 6/60 (71.3% 95% CI: 67.4 to 74.9) and
106 eyes had VA 6/60, surgery on the
second eye, and operating on the unilaterally blind would not help in reducing
the blindness, though it may prevent the blindness in future. The quality of the
surgery needs improvement to get better post operative Visual Acuity.
Regular Provision of Outreach Increases Acceptance of Cataract
Surgery in South India
1. Sankara Eye Care Institutions
2. Department of Ophthalmology, University of Bonn
Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the hypothesis that regular
outreach, held in the same location by the same provider, leads to greater
acceptance of cataract surgery than outreach clinics that are irregular in terms
of timing and location.
Methods: The study was integrated into outreach clinics run in two districts by
Sankara Eye Centre, Coimbatore, Southern India, and data collected using a
semi-structured questionnaire.
Results: Overall acceptance of surgery was high (91.7%) being higher in the
district with regular outreach (94.6% vs. 82.3%, p
