Ocular Tumours
Jager Martine (1)
1. Department of Ophthalmology, LUMC
Uveal melanoma is an ocular malignancy, which occurs especially in
Caucasians. It is intriguing that this tumor has a very low frequency in Asians
and Africans. While the occurrence of multiple uveal melanoma in one family
is quite rare, associations with the presence of dysplastic nevi and cutaneous
melanoma have been described. For most patients, a somatic genetic
predilection has not been found as yet. However, genetic variations may play a
role in the immunological response against the tumor or against tumor spread.
Genetics of Behcet›s Disease
Ohno Shigeaki (1)
1. Department of Ocular Inflammation and Immunology, Hokkaido University
Graduate School of Medicine
Our recent GWAS studies of Behcet›s disease revealed that four important
genes; (1)HLA-B*51, (2)HLA-A*26, (3)IL23R-IL12RB2, and (4)IL10 were
closely associated with the susceptibility to this disease. These data partly
explains why this disease occurs mainly between the Middle East countries
and East Asian countries along the ancient Silk Road. In addition to present
anti-TN?therapy, our data suggest that we may be able to develop new
treatment by suppressing IL23 and/or IL12, and enhancing IL10 activity in
Behcet›s disease.
Allergy
Leonardi Andrea (1)
1. University of Paova
The acquisition of genomic information may revolutionize the detection of
causative genes for ocular allergy. Insights obtained from new discoveries
have changed our ways of understanding allergic conjunctivitis. Multiple
groups have attempted to identify disease-susceptibility genes via either a
candidate gene approach or by genome-wide scans. Both of these approaches
have implicated multiple regions in the human and mouse genomes, which are
currently being evaluated as harboring putative atopy genes. Genetics and
molecular mechanisms of both common allergic diseases and ocular allergy
will be discussed.
Age Related Maculopathy
Chan Eng Chi-Chao (1)
1. National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health
Risk for AMD is multifactorial, relating to age, environmental and genetic
factors. Genome-wide and targeted genetic association studies have identified
various polymorphisms important for AMD susceptibility. Among them, many
are immune-related genes, including complement factors, e.g. CFH, C2, C3,
CFB, and CFI; Toll-like receptors, e.g., TLR-3 and TLR-4; chemokines and
receptors, e.g., CX3CR1 and CCR3. In addition, copy number variation,
miRNA and epigenetics related to immune relevant genes could also contribute
to AMD pathogenesis and patient responses to specific therapies.
Pupil Assessment, Refractive Error Correction and Low Vision
Pupil in Neuro Ophthalmology
El Menaisy Abdullah (1)
1. Dhahran Eye Specialist Hospital
The pupil is a kinetic indicator of both visual and ocular motor condition. Nerve
supply to the pupil comes from sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
Evaluation of the pupil is an important part of ophthalmic examination. Pupillary
abnormalities include abnormal shape, unequal size and abnormal response
to light or accommodation. The aim of my presentation is to show how to
evaluate the pupil and also to discuss in brief the common neuro-ophthalmic
pupillary abnormalities.
Pupil in Relation to Refractive Surgery
Gamaly Tamer (1)
1. Magrabi Eye & Ear Center
Refractive surgery is one of the most common ophthalmic surgeries done
nowadays. Refractive surgery has two main arms: laser and non laser
refractive surgery. Assessing the pupil is crucial in both types, as it will affect
the quality of vision of the patient as well as it might lead to an important post
operative complication, namely haloes around light at night. This might turn
the refractive surgery operation from a safe solution to a permanent disable.
Low Visual Aids
Hamdi Islam (1,2)
1. Magrabi
2. Ain Shams University
Purpose: To highlight the value of low visual aids (LVA) in practice.
Synopsis: The presentation will define the individuals in need for LVA. We will
highlight the definition of legal blindness. Various methods of assisting
individual in need for LVA will be mentioned with a classification of different
tools according to their scientific principle, use, categories and generations. By
the end of the presentation, the audience should be able to diagnose and guide
LVA patients towards the most appropriate method.
