Inequality of Training
Mathenge Ciku (1)
1. Fred Hollows Foundation
This light hearted presentation will describe the experiences of an African
woman training in ophthalmology up to PhD level both from the perspective of
trainers and trainees. The presentation uses personal anecdotes highlighting
the fact that inequalities exist; that perhaps some inequalities are inevitable
while also presenting evidence based information on inequality in training in
medicine in general and ophthalmology in particular.
Developing Equity in Training
Al-Aswad Lama (1)
1. Columbia University Medical Center
The medical profession is committed to the promotion of health education and
health care. In most countries, admission policy to medical schools is gender
neutral and in other countries affirmative action is required to promote and
encourage women enrolment to medical school. However post medical school,
women are lured away from traditional male specialties and when it comes
to their academic carriers they are promoted at a slower rate and with less
institutional support than their male counterpart. Actions and interventions can
be taken to tackle this issue but should we push for 50% male to female ratio
in all specialties or should we push for a fair process that results in gender
equality?
To be effective in your profession, it is helpful to have a unique and recognizable
brand. One must first discover what is one’s passion or niche - because a
successful brand must, at its core, be authentic. Your personal brand is
how others perceive you, but it is also about being true to yourself. In this
presentation, methods will be described on how to find and market your
personal brand.
Developing Women›s Network
MacDonald Susan (1)
1. Lahey Clinic, Tufts School of Medicine
WIO has begun the first steps to a long journey to grow into an international
organization. The response from our first six months have been overwhelmingly
positive. We are confident that the interest and enthusiasm for the expansion
exists. We have approached this project with a hybrid model of a grass roots
model and known networks and organizations. We feel this will allow individuals
the ability to self identify and join, while also utilizing our known networks
to ask for assistance. We will continue to develop our web site to allow the
exchange of information concerns and opportunities. WIO is actively planning
several formal symposium and informal gatherings to allow the development
of a network that will support and promote women. Finally we will continue to
approach the needs assessments with an open mind and to listen. We realize
we do not know what other women›s needs may be and our cultural differences
will require a level of sensitivity to fully learn from each other. Our goal is to
create a network to support, promote and remove barriers for all women in
ophthalmology.
