Purpose: To study the optic nerve function changes in order to highlight factors
predictive of visual outcome after orbitotomy.
Methods: A prospective interventional study of optic nerve function changes in
cases of well defined orbital tumors. Various nerve function parameters were
measured before and after surgery and correlated with visual outcome.
These included color vision, Goldmann visual fields (GVF) and visual evoked
response (VER).
Results: 28 representative cases of orbital tumors underwent orbitotomy
surgery. The mean preoperative visual acuity was 0.54 ± 0.33 which improved
postoperatively to 0.66 ± 0.31(p=0.002). Preoperatively, 12.0% eyes had disc
pallor which increased to 16.6% after surgery, while 18.3% had disc edema all
of which resolved postoperatively. 40% of the affected eyes had a deficient color
vision and partially improved postoperatively(p=0.25). GVF had abnormalities
in 10 cases, half of which normalized postoperatively (p=0.04).The VER of
affected eyes had a mean amplitude of 8.91 ±4.59 µv and latency 116.3 ± 14.7
ms with improvement after surgery (p
