Abstract:
The metalwork ateliers in the medieval Spain produced golden objects of an
exceptional quality, poorly known and conserved, though they are part of an essential
legacy for the knowledge of the technological development of one of the most
outstanding periods of the metallurgy in the Iberian Peninsula, a knowing which was
introduced in the Spanish colonies after the Conquest. This project has as its main
objective to approach to the problems related to the conservation and restoration of
these ancient objects made of golden metal, which are usually recovered from the
archaeological sites in a poor state that threatens their future survival. To achieve
these aims we are proposing a detailed research, with a multidisciplinary collaboration
and contribution, to the causes which determine the singularity of its deterioration
process, counting on the most accurate analysis techniques given by the most actual
scientific technology: SEM with EDXA, XRD, XRF, PIXE and RBS. We also want to
value with this same analytical procedures the technological process of the gilding
during Medieval Islamic Spain, which have been scarcely investigated until today.
With all these things we will be able to achieve the final objective of this project: to test
and apply the most accurate and effective restoration techniques and procedures
which can guarantee a good conservation of this Metallic Archaeological Heritage
