136 LES CHEVAUX ANGLAIS. encolure et en général par son avant-main, le suffolkpunch. Les norfolks de notre temps sont ordinairement plus grands de taille, laquelle, cependant, dépasse rarement l m ,60; ils sont d'une constitution solide et robuste, rappelant un peu celle des suffolks. Dans tous les cas, leur extérieur est beaucoup moins noble que celui des trotteurs russes ou américains. La tête n'est pas noble du tout; l'encolure longue est attachée assez haut, mais épaisse et charnue ; le garrot n'est pas bas. Ils ont le dos horizontal, la croupe large, longue, robuste et arrondie, avec une queue bien plantée ; la poitrine peu large, mais longue et profonde ; les épaules longues et suffisamment obliquées ; les membres relativement courts, bien musclés et vigoureux; les articulations bien développées, surtout celles des jarrets ; les paturons courts, ornés de petits fanons. Le rouan, le bai et l'alezan sont les robes les plus communes. Le rouan argenté ou vineux est préféré, car c'est la robe héréditaire des trotteurs célèbres. Les mouvements sont assez beaux ; les genoux des membres antérieurs sont plies et élevés suffisamment, les pieds des membres postérieurs dépassent les traces des sabots de devant ; mais ni l'un ni l'autre mouvement n'est aussi développé que chez le trotteur russe. Le trot du norfolk est plus court que celui du trotteur russe ; sa vélocité dépend plutôt de la rapidité que de la largeur des mouvements. A de petites distances il peut trotter avec la rapidité de 22 à 27 kilomètres par heure ; pour de grandes distances il est trop lourd. Les Anglais ne sont pas grands amateurs des courses au trot et ils ne tiennent pas les norfolks en grande estime, surtout à cause de leurs formes peu nobles. Les Français et les Allemands, au contraire , les apprécient beaucoup et les *.
