Les Kirghizes sédentaires, outre les chevaux et les moutons, élèvent des bœufs et des vaches, mais rarement des chameaux, qui ne leur sont pas nécessaires dans leurs voyages de peu d'étendue. Les Kirghizes nomades s'occupent exclusivement de l'élevage du bétail et représentent le type le plus caractéristique des nomades vagabonds, demi-sauvages, de nos jours. Tout ce qui a été dit (pages 44-46) de l'élevage des bestiaux chez les nomades se rapporte principalement à ces Kirghizes-là. Ils errent dans les steppes dès le commencement du printemps jusqu'à l'automne le plus avancé, et même l'hiver ils ne restent pas toujours à la même place. Des espèces de tentes en feutre, appelées kibitkas, leur servent d'habitations; en cas de besoin, ces kibitkas sont vite démontées, chargées sur les arbas (chariots à roues massives, faites d'une seule pièce) et transportées par les chameaux. Les Kirghizes nomades n élèvent pas ordinairement de bœufs ni de vaches; mais outre les chevaux et les moutons, ils ont des chameaux qu'ils emploient comme bêtes de somme pour le transport des arbas, chargées des kibitkas, des ustensiles de ménage et de ceux des membres de leurs familles qui ne peuvent aller à cheval. De même que le Kirghize nomade est le représentant le plus pur du type nomade, son cheval est le produit le plus typique de l'élevage des chevaux à l'état demi-sauvage.
