Conjuring with coins was one magic specialty that was particularly
popular in variety theatres. “Dollar kings” like T. Nelson Downs “palmed”
dozens of coins at once while showing both sides of their hands empty,
then produced coin after coin in rapid sequence. Released just six months
after Downs, “le roi des dollars”, appeared at the Folies-Bergère with his
act “The Miser’s Dream”, this film ups the ante through a preternatural
display of palming made possible by cinema. With the help of an unwitting
assistant, the hands of a conjurer produce greater and greater quantities
of gold coins in close-up shot, then congratulate one another.
Around the turn of the last century, the archetypal figure of the magician
was typically embodied by a man, but women magicians were not at all
uncommon. Indeed, Adelaide Herrmann (widow of Alexander Herrmann)
headlined international music halls with a sumptuous act of illusionism,
while a number of other female magicians – both amateur and professional
– performed in the United States and Europe. In this film, a female conjurer
causes pigeons to multiply and fly into her hands.
A female conjurer standing beside a lake produces a number of figures from
thin air, making them disappear in puffs of smoke. She then dips a bucket
into the lake, and pouring it out, causes these individuals to again
materialize, before drawing the water back into the bucket and bringing
about another startling disappearance.
scompaiano e riappaiano dietro parasoli in movimento.
This beautifully colored magic film elaborates on the theme of conjuring
with flowers in an Orientalist stage setting. Two women clad in gold kimonos
produce a large wreath of brightly colored chrysanthemum flowers, in which
living portraits of fashions in hats and scarves magically appear, before the
women themselves disappear and reappear behind spinning parasols.
