Commission of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF). We are delighted that the Giornate has become a major international meeting
place: other organizations who have chosen to hold their annual assemblies during this festival week are Domitor, the Associazione Italiana per
le Ricerche di Storia del Cinema, and the Women’s Film History International Project.
The 11th FilmFair presents the latest film books, along with DVDs, collectors’ items, and memorabilia, and hosts daily personal meetings with
film authors. The exhibition “Chaplin’s Shadow” consists of documents, including many hitherto unknown photographs, from the personal
collection of Toraichi Kono (1885-1971), who for two decades, starting in 1916, played an important role in the life of Charles Chaplin, as his
personal servant and close confidant. “Images of Silence: The Glory of Turin’s Silent Cinema” is a selection of stills – many taken on sets during
the production of films in the golden era of the 1910s – from the collections of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema of Turin. In Pordenone, a further
exhibition, of items from the Carlo Montanaro Collection of pre-cinema, early film technology, and animation, will be on show throughout the
festival at the Galleria Sagittaria.
Finally, we are proud and pleased that for the third year our guest of honour will be Diana Serra Cary. Already world-famous 85 years ago as
Baby Peggy, she has since had several careers, to emerge today as a fine writer, a perceptive chronicler of Hollywood – and the undisputed Muse
of the Giornate.
As we said last year, we can confidently predict that our guests may succumb to exhaustion, but never to boredom. We also know that they will
join us in reiterating our unceasing gratitude to our friends in FIAF and public and private archives across the world, whose unstinting support
alone makes possible the Giornate del Cinema Muto. And not least our donors, whose financial contributions enable us to maintain the level of
our activities in increasingly difficult economic times.
Welcome to the 25th edition of the Giornate del Cinema Muto. It’s going to be a busy week!
