Meno di due anni dopo il debutto di Felix, l’accordo di distribuzione stipulato da Pat Sullivan con la Paramount venne meno, e nel 1922 egli iniziò a distribuire i film tramite M. He began releasing the Felix films through M. J.Winkler in 1922, where Felix really hit his stride. Felix Gets Revenge is one of the earlier films in the Winkler deal, showcasing a mischievous, unforgiving, opportunistic troublemaker. Felix rescues an apple-poaching youth from a vigilant dog and earns a place in the youth’s heart and home. The youth’s father, however, is not so welcoming, and does everything he can to be rid of the cat. Felix tries several times to get into the father’s favor and secure a spot in the house, but to no avail. It is only after mice overrun the house that the father is willing to give Felix a home. Il disegnatore Bill Nolan promosse nel 1924 un leggero re-styling di Felix, rendendolo un po’ più tondetto e carino, evidentemente per far affezionare il pubblico più giovane e rendere il gatto più vendibile. Nell’agosto del 1925, Sullivan passò Felix ad un altro distributore, l’Educational Pictures, promettendo di produrre un nuovo cartoon ogni due settimane. Toyland è il terzo film di Felix uscito sotto l’egida della Educational. Felix si imbatte in una ragazzina che si vede soffiare la bambola da un cane, le promette che gliela salverà e si mette all’inseguimento. Dopo che il cane è stato eliminato e la bambola aggiustata, quest’ultima, assai grata, si offre di portare Felix a visitare Toyland. Qui incontrano Pierrot, un clown con aspirazioni romantiche verso la bambola che, vistosi respinto, la rapisce: ne nasce un inseguimento in una terra in cui tutto è materiale scenico. Bolle di sapone e cavalli a dondolo sono i mezzi che portano Felix alla torre dov’è tenuta prigioniera la bambola e dove l’assalto di un esercito di soldatini di legno lo aiuterà a ricongiungersi all’amata. – JARED CASE Animator Bill Nolan instigated a slight re-design of Felix in 1924, making him slightly rounder and cuter, ostensibly endearing him to a younger crowd and making him more marketable. Sullivan moved Felix to another new distributor, Educational Pictures, in August of 1925, promising them a new Felix cartoon every two weeks. Toyland is the third Felix film released under the Educational banner. Felix comes across a girl whose doll is being stolen by a dog. Felix assures her that he will rescue the doll, and chases the dog. Once the dog has been dispatched and the doll repaired, the doll herself is very thankful and offers to take Felix to see Toyland. In Toyland, they meet Pierrot, a clown with romantic designs on the doll.When he is rebuffed, he kidnaps the doll, and a chase ensues in a land where everything is a prop. Bubbles and rocking horses are transportation devices which convey Felix to the tower where the doll is being held prisoner. Solo il gatto Felix non riesce a trovare su tutta la Terra una compagnia romantica. Una volta, però, che nota un’attraente felina attraverso il telescopio, si imbarca su un razzo per Marte, dove le sue surreali avventure lo porteranno ad insegnare il Charleston in un nightclub. All the birds, fish, dogs, and humans seem to have dates. Only Felix the Cat is unable to find a romantic companion on Earth. But once he spots an alluring feline female through a telescope, he embarks on a rocket ride to Mars, where his surreal adventures include teaching the Charleston in a nightclub. Questo esempio del sottogenere commedia preistorica fu il primo dei film di Felix distribuito dalla Educational Pictures, dopo gli accordi di Sullivan con la Paramount e Winkler. Tra le sue disavventure preistoriche, che alla fine gli faranno apprezzare il ritorno alla moderna “età della spazzatura”, deve accettare di vedersi togliere la pelliccia, usata come un tipico indumento dell’Età della Pietra. Secondo una consuetudine comune a questo genere, i primi uomini condividono la stessa era geologica dei mammut e dei dinosauri, ma questo conta poco in un film così surreale che il suo “plasticismo polimorfo” (Donald Crafton) va ben oltre il corpo di Felix, per includere, per esempio, un sauropodoscala mobile in stile Gertie ed il getto di un geyser che funge da paracadute. Come osserva John Canemaker, la lunga caduta giù per un canyon anticipa i molti scontri con la forza di gravità di Wile E. Coyote di Chuck Jones. Un ulteriore tocco di sofisticatezza viene aggiunto quando “Messmer alterna fotogrammi positivi e negativi (…), secondo una tecnica salutata come audace e innovativa quando i cineasti sperimentali presero ad usarla nei tardi anni ’60 e nei primi ’70” (Charles Solomon). Peraltro, questi tocchi di stile così ingegnosi sfuggirono al critico del contemporaneo Moving Picture World, che pure notò: “il soggetto è preciso, in genere piacevole, e qua e là divertente.” – ULRICH RUEDEL This example of the sub-genre of prehistoric comedy was the first of the Felix films released by Educational Pictures, following Sullivan’s distribution agreements with Paramount and Winkler. Here, it is Father Time himself 45 who allows Felix to escape the unhappy 1920s, which have him starving to the extent of even tasting a shoe found in a trash can (a possible nod to the recently released The Gold Rush by acknowledged Felix role model Charlie Chaplin). Among his prehistoric misadventures, which eventually render him happy to return to the modern “garb’age”, he has to deal with having his fur peeled off to be used as a customary Stone Age garment. Following a common practice in this genre, early humans share the same geological era with mammoths and dinosaurs, but this matters little in a film so surreal that its “polymorphous plasticism” (Donald Crafton) extends far beyond Felix’s body, to include, for instance, a Gertie-esque sauropod-turned-escalator and a geyser spout serving as parachute.As John Canemaker observes, a long fall down a street canyon anticipates the many gravity encounters of Chuck Jones’Wile E. Coyote. Further sophistication is added when “Messmer alternates positive and negative frames (…), a technique that was heralded as bold and innovative when experimental filmmakers began employing it in the late 1960s and early 1970s” (Charles Solomon). Questo cartoon fu preceduto, e presumibilmente ispirato, dal successo della canzone “Felix Kept on Walking” (1923), di Edward E. Bryant e Hubert W.
