I campionari
In a lonely street by night, a young woman flees, pursued by mysterious
bandits.A cinema affords an unhoped-for refuge – but also the occasion to
forget her woes in admiring the exploits of the Numidian slave Maciste in
Cabiria. What better ally could the girl wish for, to free her from her
persecutors? Soon afterwards, a strange letter arrives at the modern studios
of Itala Film, addressed to Maciste…
The first film of the series dedicated to Maciste, after the huge personal
success of the character in Cabiria, explores metacinematic suggestions to
allow the good giant to abandon Carthaginian garb and adopt a more
contemporary double-breasted suit. In the course of the adventure there is
no lack of opportunity to show off the gymnastic and circus-worthy gifts of
the hero, who single-handedly takes on the entire band of villains; remains
suspended in mid-air; infiltrates himself, in disguise, into the most varied
situations; and, in one of the film’s highlights, bound hand and foot, lifts a
table with his teeth, to climb up and smash the ceiling with his shoulders.
The double-breasted suit will be reduced to shreds, but after all, “Maciste
may lose his shirt, but never his skin!”
The restoration of Maciste was carried out in 2006 by the Museo
Nazionale del Cinema of Turin and the Cineteca del Comune di Bologna, at
the laboratory L’Immagine Ritrovata, and is based on a unique firstgeneration
tinted and toned nitrate print, with Dutch intertitles, conserved
by the Nederlands Filmmuseum,Amsterdam. The errors and lacunae in the
print have been identified by study of production documents conserved by
the Museo Nazionale del Cinema of Turin. The Italian intertitles have been
reconstructed thanks to the censorship report, from production records, and
from photographic plates. Colour samples, finally, have provided
fundamental clues to the cutting, the placing of titles, and the colouring.
Among Maciste’s obligatory roles in the course of his adventures is that of
saviour of defenceless girls, who are, however, destined to be instantly
restored to their legitimate fiancés.The giant, for his part, seens quite happy
to devote himself to the gymnasium and his food rather than to the
attractions of the gentle sex. Sooner or later, though, love comes to everyone,
and Maciste is no exception: she is Ada, the daughter of Mr.Thompson, an
enlightened industrialist who allows the Itala company to use the garden of
his villa as a film set. A jealous rival, Bethel, wants to compel Thompson to
acquire his own firm, on the brink of ruin, and is ready to do anything to
achieve his objective. First, through the agency of three disloyal employees, he
incites his rival’s workers to strike; then he has Ada abducted in order to
blackmail her father. Naturally he has not counted on Maciste, who this time,
beyond his usual concern to defend the weak, can add more personal
motives to throw himelf into the adventure. The representation of the mass
of the workers, not without paternalism, has great visual impact. Confirming
