VITAPHONE VARIETIES 1927-1930 Cortometraggi Vitaphone con colonna sonora su disco L’UCLA Film & Television Archive ha il piacere di presentare un programma di cortometraggi Vitaphone che sono stati tra i momenti clou delle ultime tre edizioni del Festival of Preservation di Los Angeles. I titoli scelti per Sacile sono quelli dell’edizione 2006 del festival e, puntando sulla commedia, promettono un gran divertimento per tutti. Con il crescere dell’interesse verso l’intrattenimento popolare degli anni Venti – l’età del jazz –, è venuto anche il momento di riscoprire il talento, l’energia aspra e l’autentica originalità di questi artisti. Fra questi ritorna il duo comico Shaw & Lee, uno dei pezzi forti del Festival of Preservation del 2004, e farà la sua apparizione anche un altro duo, Jans & Whelan. Il noto caratterista Jay C. Flippen (lo riconoscerete di sicuro, anche se il nome non vi dice molto) compare in un numero dai suoi esordi nel vaudeville. Perfino i capibanda Dick Rich e Jack White fanno battute tra un numero e l’altro. Broadway è rappresentata da Adele Rowland, celebre cantante teatrale del periodo tra il 1900 e gli anni ’10, mentre “The Morrissey and Miller Night Club Revue” darà spettacolo con il suo corpo di ballo. Il programma si apre con un’esibizione del famoso gruppo vocale The Revelers, che ispirarono i Comedian Harmonists tedeschi. Ricordiamo rapidamente che la Vitaphone Corporation venne creata dalla Warner Brothers nel 1926 per lo sviluppo commerciale del film sonori. Dal 1927 al 1930 la società realizzò nei suoi studi di New York e Los Angeles quasi duemila cortometraggi. Restaurarne uno significa trovare elementi in buone condizioni sia per ciò che concerne la pellicola che dischi, impresa non da poco se si considera la fragilità fisica di entrambi i supporti. – DAVID PENDLETON A programme of Vitaphone sound-on-disc short subjects The UCLA Film & Television Archive is pleased to present a program of Vitaphone shorts.These lively programs have been among the highlights of the last three editions of the Festival of Preservation held in Los Angeles, and this selection from this year’s festival promises a fun time for all, with the emphasis on comedy. With interest in the popular entertainment of the 1920s Jazz Age on the rise, the time is ripe for a rediscovery of the talent, raucous energy, and often true eccentricity of these performers. One of the highlights of the 2004 Festival of Preservation program, comic duo Shaw & Lee, returns, while another comic duo, Jans & Whelan, also makes an appearance. Jay C. Flippen, a well-known character actor (you’ll probably recognize him, even if the name isn’t familiar), appears doing a routine from his early 50 days in vaudeville. Even bandleaders Dick Rich and Jack White deliver jokes between numbers. Broadway is represented by Adele Rowland, a singing stage star of the 1900s and ‘10s, while “The Morrissey and Miller Night Club Revue” provides spectacle with its line of dancing chorus girls. The program begins with a performance by famed vocal group The Revelers, the inspiration for Germany’s Comedian Harmonists. A bit of explanation for the uninitiated:The Vitaphone Corporation was a company created by Warner Brothers in 1926 to develop sound motion pictures. From 1927 until 1930,Vitaphone filmed nearly 2,000 shorts in its studios in New York and Los Angeles.The film portion of these shorts was delivered to theatres accompanied by large phonograph discs that held the soundtracks. Once this technology became obsolete (replaced by optical soundtracks printed directly onto the film strip),Vitaphone shorts began to fade into oblivion.
