Pensavo ti fossi stufato di me. – KEVIN BROWNLOW It is hard to believe we are celebrating Brooks’s centenary. When I first met her, at her home in Rochester, New York, she was in her late 50s, old enough to someone in his 20s, but far more exuberant than I could have hoped. She was fantastically entertaining that first day. She merrily insulted everyone – including me – in a voice that seemed to transform words into music. (How wonderful she would have been in talkies!) She was researching articles on directors she had worked with, and welcomed a new source for information and ideas. But oh, the next morning! A bottle stood on the kitchen table, mute symbol of the cause of her bad temper. And now the insults had impact. I had met many actresses of the silent era, but I had never encountered so melodramatic a transformation. (Mentally, I began to drop the “i” from her first name!) And yet beneath this bitter new persona, I could still sense the real Louise. She cooked a delicious breakfast, she kept me supplied with astonishing information, and finally sent me over to Eastman House to see the films we had been talking about. This was the beginning of a long friendship, mainly conducted through correspondence. Her letters followed the same pattern – several from that lovable Louise and then a scrawled envelope which looked as if it contained a ransom note. Shocked by her language, I would be deterred from replying. One of her 1967 letters began: “Thank goodness you are back in your old enthusiastic form. I thought you were sick of me. That would be a switch for me. Going through my phone book the other night I found that I had killed off 18 people since 1963. And considering the small number of my ‘friends’ that is mass murder.” The fans of her screen image, however, can be numbered in millions. Even girls who have never heard of Louise Brooks wear her hairstyle in unconscious tribute. She is one of the few actresses whose eroticism is undimmed by the decades. I can sense in the silent Prix de beauté that she is slightly selfconscious, that she is not being as strongly directed by Genina as she was by Pabst. “Genina spoke only French during the shooting,” she said, “and damned little of that.” Yet for most of the picture she strongly conveys her misery, amid a wealth of marvellous domestic detail. The film is more successful as a silent than as a talkie, and is all the more surprising because of that. The final scene is almost as effective as the talkie through sheer cinematic bravura. It may not have the perfection of the Pabst pictures, but here you are seeing a newly-discovered Louise Brooks picture. And the Bologna print is superb. What could be more exciting? – KEVIN BROWNLOW 33 EVENTI SPECIALI SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS
