Willy to a foreign port, where he gets Willy drunk in a seedy waterfront dive.
With the connivance of the barkeeper, the drunken Willy is tricked into
signing a seaman’s contract, which is bought by the evil captain of The
Octopus. The barkeeper’s daughter Mary likes Willy so much that she
decides to help, and seeks out Chaplain Brown, who has also been contacted
by Lilly and her father. Brown and the disguised Lilly investigate, but find that
Willy has already been taken aboard The Octopus. They give chase in
another ship, and Willy manages to jump overboard and swim to safety.
Strictly speaking, this is not a white slavery film, but it was presented with
the subtitle “Men as Victims of Slave Trafficking”, obviously with the
intention of capitalizing upon the company’s previous successes in this
genre. Like the white slavery films, this one was promoted as a film of
social consciousness, advertised as a film with a “great mission”, because
it warns against a danger which has “wrecked the lives of thousands of
honest youths”. It lacks the sexual frisson of the white slave films, but it
has many of the same structural elements, like the impotence of the
police and the aid offered by a resourceful female associate of the
criminals. – CASPER TYBJERG
RIVALINDER [Le rivali / Female Rivals] / EN KVINDEDUEL
[Duello fra donne / A Duel Between Women] (A Woman’s Duel)
(Nordisk Films Kompagni, DK 1906)
Filminstitutt / Norwegian Film Institute, Oslo. Conservazione/
(Bo Berglund in Nordic Explorations:
Film Before 1930, a cura di John Fullerton e Jan Olsson, Libbey, 1999)
l’iniziativa. – CASPER TYBJERG
A man meets his mistress, and they are both observed by a gossip; she
hurries to the man’s wife and tells her what she has seen. With the help of
58
the gossip the wife challenges the mistress to a duel. The man is informed
about the duel by a letter from his wife. When he arrives at the duel, the
mistress has just killed his wife. In despair he rejects his mistress, who then
shoots him down in cold blood before shooting herself. (Bo Berglund, in
Nordic Explorations: Film Before 1930, John Fullerton and Jan Olsson,
eds., Sydney: John Libbey & Company, 1999)
Except for Fiskerliv i Norden, this is the earliest extant Nordisk film. It was
identified in 1998 by Bo Berglund. His study of contemporary programmes
and plot synopses revealed, he writes, “how prominent the use of firearms
and violence is in the Nordisk films of 1906 and 1907; they abound in
duels, violent killings, suicides, shoot-outs, and executions, so Rivalinder is far
from the only instance”. It is also one of a considerable number of Danish
films featuring energetic female protagonists who – in striking fashion –
take matters into their own hands. – CASPER TYBJERG
disastro mentre viene testata l’arma antiaerea concepita
dall’inventore” (The LUMIERE PROJECT, 1996, p. 103).
