airplanes by a rope – stuntman Robert E. Kennedy, not Houdini – is
transformed into “one of the most remarkable happenings in
aeronauatics”; and a scene from Episode 3 of the serial The Master
Mystery (1919), in which Houdini makes an underwater escape, is
revealed as him “exposing to the public for the first time an actual
method of releasing from manacles”.
serial ridotto a cinque rulli … Va accettato in quanto tale,
scellerati parenti e tutori, i Mordaunt, mentre Harper viene
Corporation.
Houdini plays Harry Harper, an inventor and philanthropist who pilots
his own submarine from San Francisco to the South Seas in order to
rescue a shipwrecked trader, old man West (Fred Turner), who has been
captured by a group of “superstitious natives” – and, in the process,
attempts to recover a cache of diamonds and jewelry from a nearby
sunken vessel. The plot, which often defies belief, is structured by the
thrilling situations of dime-novel fiction and sensational melodrama. The
story was co-written by Arthur B. Reeve, co-author of The Exploits of
Elaine (1915), and the film was directed by former serial star James
Cruze. For at least one critic (Motion Picture News, 8 May 1920),“The
picture is nothing more or less than a wild serial compressed into five
reels…. One must accept it in a spirit of good nature and forget its
improbabilities.”
Missing from this print are some 2000 feet of film in which West’s
daughter Beverly (Lila Lee) is kidnapped by her nefarious relatives and
guardians, the Mordaunts, as Harper is left to perish: “He is shown
gagged and chained tightly to a chair in a wooden shack. The place is set
on fire, and with the flames caressing his feet, releases himself and
escapes. Again he is nailed tightly into a box and thrown into the sea. In
a few seconds he appears out of the water and climbs aboard his
enemies’ vessel.” (Variety, 30 April 1920)
This print does show Harper freeing himself while suspended by his
neck, an escape that shows the remarkable dexterity of Houdini’s toes,
which he frequently put to use in making escapes, as well as a
suspenseful climactic sequence that takes place largely underwater. This
was the second and last film Houdini made in Hollywood; after its
production, he appeared in two further feature films that were
independently produced and distributed by his own company, the
Houdini Pictures Corporation.
svolazzano tutt’attorno, mentre numerosi clown e ballerine appaiono
e scompaiono.
