Judith Beresford, figlia di un bigotto agricoltore del New England, lotta
per i diritti delle donne. Suo fratello David, che, su insistenza paterna,
si sta preparando a diventare sacerdote, sposa di nascosto Nan, la
figliastra del “tuttofare”. Quando il matrimonio viene scoperto, e con
esso la gravidanza della sposa, il padre corrompe il patrigno e Nan
fugge in città per partorire. Judith è indignata per quest’ingiustizia, ma
per suo padre il posto di una donna è la casa e il suo scopo nella vita
dovrebbe essere matrimonio e figli. Joe, il corteggiatore respinto da
Judith, diffonde su di lei maliziosi pettegolezzi, obbligandola a
contrapporsi al padre, che la caccia via. Judith va allora a New York,
dove fa carriera.Trovata Nan morente con il piccolo, decide di allevare
lei il bambino.Tempo dopo, dopo uno scontro con il padre e il fratello
che quasi le costa la perdita dell’uomo che ama, Judith decide di
sistemare la faccenda una volta per tutte: David sta per pronunciare il
suo primo sermone nella chiesa cittadina, quando Judith lo affronta
portandogli suo figlio.Vinto dal rimorso, David rinuncia al sacerdozio
ed accetta suo figlio, mentre il vecchio comprende il suo errore.

Judith Beresford, the daughter of a bigoted New England farmer, fights for
women’s rights. David, her brother, is training for the ministry at his father’s
insistence. David secretly weds Nan, the stepdaughter of the odd-jobs man.
When the marriage is discovered and she is found to be pregnant, the
father buys off the stepfather, and Nan runs off to the city to have her baby.
Judith is indignant at the injustice, but her father believes a woman’s place
is in the home and that her goal should be marriage and children. Judith’s
unwanted suitor, Joe, spreads malicious gossip about her, forcing her to stand
up to her father, who sends her away. Judith goes to New York, makes a
career for herself, and finds Nan and her baby just as the young woman is
dying. Judith decides to raise the child. Some time later, after a confrontation
with her father and brother that almost costs her the man she loves, Judith
determines to settle the matter once and for all. David is about to deliver
his first sermon in their hometown church when Judith confronts him with
his own child. He is overcome with remorse, renounces the ministry, and
accepts his son.The old man realizes the error of his ways. – STEVEN HIGGINS

Un giovane marito, cercando di sfuggire alla routine domestica, porta
una sera a cena la segretaria in un ristorante alla moda. La moglie,
avendo preparato la cena ed un dolce per lui, ne aspetta il ritorno a
casa, che però arriva tardi. Dopo aver spaccato tutto in sala da pranzo
e mandato via la giovane moglie in lacrime, l’uomo si addormenta

subito. La moglie ritorna, e lui è scioccato nel vedere che non è più la
donna dolce e premurosa di pochi momenti prima; ora è diventata una
megera spensierata, che beve, fuma e se ne va anche lei a passare una
notte brava. Il marito la segue nello stesso ristorante dov’era appena
stato a divertirsi lui e la osserva mentre se la spassa con uno strano
tipo. Disperato, se ne torna a casa e si spara. Si risveglierà per scoprire
che è stato tutto un sogno e, adeguatamente pentito per il proprio
cattivo comportamento, si riconcilia con la moglie. – STEVEN HIGGINS
A young husband, seeking an escape from his routine life at home, wines
and dines his secretary one night at a fancy restaurant. His wife, having
made supper and baked a cake for him, waits back home for his return.
When he finally does arrive it is late.After smashing up the dining room and
driving the young wife away in tears, he falls fast asleep. His wife returns,
and he is shocked to see that she is no longer the sweet, caring woman of
a few moments earlier. She has now become a carefree hellion, drinking
wine, smoking cigarettes, and storming off for her own night of fun. The
husband follows her to the same restaurant where he had just been
partying and observes her as she has a raucous time with a strange man.
In despair, he returns home and shoots himself. He awakens to find that it
has all been a dream, and, suitably repentant for his bad behavior, he and
his wife are reconciled. – STEVEN HIGGINS
