– STEVEN HIGGINS
Big Bear, the son of a Sioux chief, is sent away by his father for military
training and returns years later as a lieutenant in the U.S. cavalry. His fellow
officers and the other whites at the fort, with the exception of the colonel’s
daughter, who feels great sympathy for him, receive him coolly. One of the
other officers, jealous of the girl’s attentions toward Big Bear, picks a fight
with him, accusing him of assault and attempted murder. Big Bear is courtmartialed.
He is dismissed from the service, and returns to his village and
his father, disgraced. Some time later, with tensions rising between the Sioux
and the whites, the colonel sends the women of the company, under escort,
to a nearby fort for safety. The Sioux discover this, and determine to attack
the escort and capture the women. Big Bear cannot bring himself to join in
the attack, and, recalling the tenderness of the colonel’s daughter towards
him, he dons his cavalry uniform and rides off to help defend the
outnumbered whites. He does so valiantly, but without their knowledge, and
pays for his heroism with his life. – STEVEN HIGGINS
