A cabdriver dreams that he gives a stage magician, A. Presto, a ride in his
cab. When they arrive at the destination, the magician conjures a series of
figures from out of the seemingly empty vehicle.
luccicante.
The title of this unattributed Pathé trick film suggests that “modern
magic” – once the exclusive province of theatrical conjurers – now
included visual tricks made possible by the cinematic apparatus.A female
magician produces several grimacing heads from a box that admits no
possibility of a trap-door, then makes a huge shimmering butterfly appear
from a cloud of smoke.
dall’attore in Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1919).
vivere.” (The Sphinx, 1929, p. 281)
Conrad Veidt plays Erik the Great, a magician and hypnotist, in a reversal
of his famous role in Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1919). Erik is in
love with his young assistant Julie (Mary Philbin), and grows jealous of her
affection for another man who has joined the company, Mark Royce
(Fred Mackaye). When an accident with another assistant occurs
onstage, the magician confronts a dilemma.
One of a handful of American films directed by Hungarian émigré Paul
Fejos, its expressionistic style provides further evidence of the remarkable
diversity of his career, which spanned medicine, aviation, anthropology,
theatre, ethnographic film, and the commercial film industries of five
different countries.Though ftechniques, complaining to the studio and the
MPPDA: “Magical exposures deprive a great many entertainers, who
have given their time and money to the perfection of their specialty, of
their opportunity to earn a livelihood.” (The Sphinx, 1929, p. 281)
