“The Cinematograph”
Versi/Lyrics: Joseph W. Herbert; mus: Reginald de Koven; editore/publisher:
Jos.W. Stern & Co., New York; copyright: 24 April 1909.
Quando The
Beauty Spot andò in scena a Broadway, il 10 aprile 1909, “The
seguente sarebbero stati infatti commercializzati il valzer “The
Vitagraph Girl”, 1910; il nuovo passo doppio “Movie Rag” , 1913; il
“Tom Mix Fox-Trot,” 1919; e “The Keystone Glide,” 1915. “The
– RON MAGLIOZZI
References to the cinema appeared in stage musicals as early as 1899 in
the British success Florodora, and occurred throughout the silent film
period. When The Beauty Spot opened on Broadway on 10 April 1909,
“The Cinematograph” was the first number in the second act for the show’s
comic lead Jefferson de Angelis (1859-1933), performing as “General
Samovar, of the Russian legation at Paris”.
The varying speed and rhythm of movement on screen pointed composers
of popular music toward dance, as it did filmmakers toward montage. The
song “The Cinematograph” describes a kind of dance, and on stage it would
have ended with some eccentric footwork. Its theme of uncontrollable
syncopation, recalling comedies and trick films of the period, looks forward
to the moving-picture waltzes, rags, fox trots, and novelty dance steps – such
as “The Vitagraph Girl” waltz song, 1910; “Movie Rag” novelty two-step,
1913; “Tom Mix Fox-Trot,” 1919; and “The Keystone Glide,” 1915 – that
would be marketed in the decade that followed.“The Cinematograph” met
with limited success on stage, and was replaced during the show’s fourmonth
run with an interpolated number. – RON MAGLIOZZI
“Come Out of the Kitchen Mary Ann”
Versi/Lyrics, mus: James Kendis & Charles Bayha; editore/ publisher:
Kendis Music Pub. Co., Inc., New York; copyright: 3 November 1916.
famiglia.“She’s Back Among the Pots and Pans” (1917),“Moving Picture
Mary” (1914), “Father Was Right” (1918), “Since Mother Goes to
27
Movie Shows” (1916) e simili si sentivano in scena e circolavano
ampiamente sotto forma di spartiti ed incisioni.
“Come Out of the Kitchen Mary Ann” fu composta secondo la
cadere i nomi giusti.
O’Connell nell’incisione Victor numero 18221,
uscita il 2 gennaio 1917. – RON MAGLIOZZI
Among the most popular themes of early cinema songs was the effect of
movie-going on home life and family. “She’s Back Among the Pots and
Pans” (1917),“Moving Picture Mary” (1914),“Father Was Right” (1918),
“Since Mother Goes to Movie Shows” (1916), and the like were heard on
stage and circulated widely as sheet music and recordings.
“Come Out of the Kitchen Mary Ann” was written in the Tin Pan Alley
tradition of ethnic character numbers, satirizing the influence of popular
culture on working-class and immigrant audiences. The Irish subject of the
composition was emphasized in period recordings of the song, which
added hints of a jig and a brogue to the performance. In 1916, publishers
were still more inclined to exploit moving picture stardom rather than
individual films, and name-dropping was at the heart of the song’s appeal.
Exotic-sounding names like Valeska Suratt (and Theda Bara in a number
of other songs) made them convenient targets for comedy within the pop
music vernacular.
To enhance the song’s appeal to female consumers, a stylish portrait of
Douglas Fairbanks appeared on the cover of the most-often-seen edition.
Our performance presents a version of the lyrics sung by M.J. O’Connell on
Victor recording no. 18221, issued 2 January 1917. – RON MAGLIOZZI
“His Cute Moving Picture Machine”
VersiLyrics: Alfred Bryan; mus: Albert Gumble; editore/publisher: Jerome
H. Remick & Co., New York; copyright: 29 August 1916.
