Summary
Rob Bregman
Wolter ten Hoeve brings his first contribution as member of our editorial board. He
tells us about an accidental meeting in Mexico with a poor man asking for a lift.
In his series of articles on the old ‘Verkade’ books from the 1930’s, Theo
Heijnsdijk deals with Parodia haselbergii. Emphasis is put on the nomenclatural history
and successful cultivation of this attractive Brazilian species.
In another ongoing series, ‘In the spotlight’ by Bertus Spee, attention is paid to
Agave titanota, Pachycereus marginatus and Copiapoa humilis.
Wim Alsemgeest reports about Agave albopilosa, a recently discovered spectacular
species with remarkable pilose leaf tips. Wim outlines how difficult is was to find
these desirable plants.
Johan de Vries rediscovered Sulcorebutia glomeriseta in Bolivia, a species described
by Cardenas in 1949. The relatively small and verrucose seeds suggest a relationship
with the genus Weingartia. An English summary is included at the end of
the article.
The series on the genus Cotyledon by Ton Pullen and Ben Zonneveld is continued
with part 11, in which C. woodii is presented. The inflorenscence of this species
is often reduced to a single pendant flower.
Peter van Steijn and Ton Pullen report about a white-flowering form of Matucana
weberbaueri. This mutation sprung up spontaneously from seeds of the orange-flowering
forma flammea. Unfortunately, only one specimen exhibited this unusual flower
color.
A second contribution dealing with the genus Agave is by Ivana Richter, who visited
the botanic garden of Palermo, in Sicily, Italy.
Henk Ruinaard paid a visit to City of Rock State Park, New Mexico, USA. He
came across beautiful clusters of Echinocereus coccineus ssp. rosei, a plant with sometimes
functionally unisexual flowers.
Louis Van de Meutter presents Stapelia barklyi. It is assumed that this plant must
be a hybrid of S. pulvinata and Orbea namaquensis.
Aiko Talens tested loamy clay as component of substrates for succulent plants.
Advantage is the rapid uptake of water which is gradually distributed through the
soil. Also, it seems to be less attractive to sciara flies and other soil pests.
Wolter ten Hoeve reviews the contents of other journals on succulent plants.
