ABSTRACT
The main topic of the thesis is ,in general, art, yet its specific aim is to
determine the ‘abstraction’- oriented similar(ities) aspects between Postmodern
Literature and Traditional Turkish (Drama) Theatre. The framework of the study is
based on the concept of ‘abstraction’. Thus, based on this concept, the art of
painting ,in which the conception of ‘abstract art’ is theorized, is considered the first
part of the study to determine the technical methods employed in both postmodern
literature and Traditional Turkish Theatre.
In literature, postmodern period in which the method of ‘abstraction’ is most
commonly employed is encountered. It is apparent that the methods employed in
postmodern literature with such main topics as variability/plurality, jumps in time
and space, partialness, distant angle, irony/grotesque/fantasy/symbol,and
intertextness are based on ‘abstraction’.
Considering the concept of abstraction in theatre in general, it is seen that the
similar methods are employed during periods varying from Ancient Greece to Tom
Stoppard Theatre.
The situation becomes more interesting in Traditional Turkish Theatre,
because almost all the abstaction – oriented characteristics of postmodern literature
are found in Ortaoyun, Karagöz and Meddah in all means despite centuries of
interval of time. The most basic reason for this is the chaotic circumstances and
social crisis of twentieth century-western societies and the multiculturality-based
chaos of seventeenth century Anatolia.
In conclusion, the study may be considered an evaluation that the type of art
which undergoes concomitant changes and evolution with world might move one
more step ahead in art regardless of the period of the work of art, provided that it
is evaluated with the current and future conception of art.
