After a brief discussion <strong>of</strong> the problems <strong>of</strong> dating in relation to the so-called<br />

Hellenizing school <strong>of</strong> Armenian translations, the article examines the Armenian<br />

translation <strong>of</strong> the Leg. from the linguistic point <strong>of</strong> view. Particular attention is<br />

paid to the transposition into Armenian <strong>of</strong> some key terms in <strong>Philo</strong>’s exegesis.<br />

This involves three different translation processes: usually the translator has<br />

a fixed correspondence between a Greek term <strong>and</strong> its Armenian equivalent;<br />

sometimes, however, he uses the same Armenian word to render two different<br />

Greek words which need to be distinguished, e.g. δέα <strong>and</strong> εδς; but on other<br />

occasions he analyses the Greek term <strong>and</strong> uses more than one Armenian word<br />

to render it. It is particularly the last method that makes the Armenian version<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Philo</strong>’s text so distinctive. (RR; based on author’s summary)<br />

The language used in the Armenian translation <strong>of</strong> Leg.shouldnotbeconsidered<br />

exclusively in terms <strong>of</strong> the parameters <strong>of</strong> the so-called Hellenizing school.<br />

The linguistic traits that are present in the translation reveal a dialectical relation<br />

consisting <strong>of</strong> similarities <strong>and</strong> differences with the classical language. The Armenian<br />

version <strong>of</strong> Leg. has to be viewed in the linguistic framework formed by the<br />

other Armenian translations <strong>of</strong> <strong>Philo</strong>. Elements <strong>of</strong> contrast between these versions<br />

<strong>and</strong> those attributed to the initial phase <strong>of</strong> the school <strong>of</strong> Hellenizing translation<br />

which is typified as ‘pre-Hellenizing’ allow some questions to be asked<br />

about the relative dating <strong>of</strong> certain Hellenizing writings. (DTR; based on author’s<br />

This bilingual edition <strong>of</strong> Ad Autolycum considers <strong>Philo</strong> to be an important<br />

antecedent <strong>of</strong> the Antiochian theological school to which its author Theophilus<br />

belongs. More than 300 <strong>Philo</strong>nic passages are mentioned in order to elucidate<br />

the text <strong>of</strong> the Christian author. Lexical <strong>and</strong> ideological continuity st<strong>and</strong> out<br />

in subjects like creatio ex nihilo (p. 69), the theological meaning <strong>of</strong> μναρία<br />

(p. 115), the allegorical use <strong>of</strong> the term τριάς (p. 115), the relation <strong>of</strong> human<br />

beings <strong>and</strong> animals before the change to sin <strong>and</strong> salvation (p. 141), the concept <strong>of</strong><br />

eternal life (pp. 169, 189), a non-eschatological conception <strong>of</strong> μετάνια (p. 139),<br />

the correlation between νμς σεως <strong>and</strong> Torah (p. 139), <strong>and</strong> many others.<br />
