It has been shown that the corruption within the Ottoman administration towards<br />

the end of Bayezid II’s reign is severely criticized by Selimnāme 1248 authors. The<br />

criticism, however, is usually pointed towards the viziers and other high bureaucrats,<br />

whom Bayezid II entrusted the state affairs because of his tiresome health condition. 1249<br />

A contemporary source states, for example, that Bayezid, in his last years, pursued a<br />

religious life and entrusted the state to the viziers. Therefore, he was not aware of the<br />

state of affairs of his subjects. 1250 Then the unknown author points his condemnation<br />

1248 Selim’s acquisition of the throne by force from his father was an unprecedented event in the Ottoman<br />

history and contradictory to the tradition. Thus, during his reign to justify and to legitimize his usurpation<br />

became foremost issue of the Ottoman ideology makers. It is because of that so many histories dedicated<br />

to the eight-year reign of Selim were written. This special genre within Ottoman historiography is<br />

generally called ‘Selimnāme’.<br />

1249 “Hakān-ı sa’īd merhūm Sultan Bāyezid’ün müddet-i hizmeti, ki otuz iki yıldur, ihtimāma karīb oldı,<br />

vücūd-ı şerifini, ki merkez-i dā’ire-i hilm ü cüddür, cünūd-ı ‘ilel her cānibden ortaya aldı, dest-i takdir<br />

pençe-i tedbirin burup, (ayak) zahmeti huzūrın uçurub nikris zahmeti, ki maraz-ı mevrūsiydi, hudūs<br />

bulmış, mizācına tamam müstevli olmuşdı....Ol sebepeden cihangirlik rikābından ayak çeküb, ‘inān-ı<br />

‘ālem-sitānı elden komışdı, būm-ı Rūmda husūm-ı kudūmla nerd-i neberdi gāyibāne oynayub bis’āt-ı pürnesātı<br />

rezmün temāşāsından göz yummış, el yumışdı. Ol sebepten sarsar-ı nekbet-eser-i sūr u şeş-cihāt-ı<br />

heft-kişver toldı; huffāş gibi müstetir olub, būm-ı şum gibi bir bucağa baş sokub, zalām-ı şām-ı fitne būm-ı<br />

Rūmı kaçan tutar diyu muntazır olub, cerād-vār etrāf-ı bilāda münteşir oldı...” KPZ8b, pp. 38-9.<br />

Celalzāde follows the same line of argument. But a uniquie account of him is worth to state here. He<br />

argues Bayezid entrusted high state posts – without regarding whether or not they meritted - to the<br />

bureaucrats who were his retinue while he was prince in Amasya. His account reads, “...merhūmun<br />

mizācında nev’-i fütūr, i’tidāl-i tabī’atda kusur olmağın, ahvāl-i memlekete kasd ü şu’ūra iltifay itmeyüb,<br />

giderek āsştane-i sa’ādetde vezārete istihkāk mülāhazası metrūk olub, Amassıyya’da şehzāde iken içeru<br />

hizmetlerinde olan ba’zı bendelerini tizcek mertebe-i bālāya irişdirüb, vezīr, tāyife-i tavāşiden ba’zını<br />

dahī serīr-i sadārete getürüb, müşīr-i sahib-i tedbīr eylediler. Sarayda perverde olmuş hālī zihnler,<br />

merāsim-i saltanatda ‘āmiller üslūb-ı hilāfetde kem-nāmiler, tedābir-i umūrda kāsıru’l-‘ukūl kalīlu’lfühūm,<br />

ārā-i intizām-ı mülkde za’ifü’l-kuūb ve nahīfü’l-ulūm kimesneler, serīr-i vezāretde hüküm-pezīr ve<br />

kezā-te’sīr oldılar...” CLZ, p. 95. On this issue also consider MNB, p. 428.<br />

1250 “Çün Hazret-i Pādişāh-ı hilāfet-penāh ‘inān-ı ihtiyārdan makām-ı vezāretde olan bir niçe bedgirdārların<br />

eline virub kendüler zühd ü salāhı kem-nişīn idinüb serīr-ı ferāgatde ‘uzlet-güzīn olmuşlardır.<br />

Vüzerā-i. K.ejranın kemāl-i intikāmlarına hüsn-i i’tikādları ve i’timād-ı küllīleri müte’allık oldığı ecilden<br />

kendüler re’iyyet ahvāline bī-nefsihī mübāşir değillerdi. ‘Ale’l-husūs mübārel mizaçlarında vāki’ olan<br />

ihtilāl sebeb-i infi’al olmağın memleket bunlarun sū-i tedbirleriyle halel-pezīr olduğına nāzır olmazdı.<br />

Zikrolan vüzerā Sāmānilerun sebeb-i zevāl-i saltanat-ı kahiresinden, ki ünvān-ı musībet-nāme-i rüzgārdır,<br />
