These newcomers are typically younger than the average<br />

resident. Nationally, the median age of the Hispanic<br />

population is 27 years, compared to 31 for the population<br />

as a whole. These new residents will need homes and<br />

neighborhoods in which to raise their families, schools<br />

within walking distance, and easy access to jobs via the<br />

transportation network.<br />

Finally, there is the factor of heightened competition<br />

between metropolitan areas for young adults, those<br />

between 20 and 34. As shown in Chart 8, below, the<br />

proportion of young people will decline, from nearly 30%<br />

of the population in 1980 to about 20% in 2030. This<br />

mirrors trends nationwide, where employers are likely to<br />

face a sharp drop off in the number of workers over the<br />

next 30 years.<br />
