Main production systemsAs is shown in Table A1.103 and Table A1.104 in 2003 the majority of holdings (89.1% or 156 out of175 holdings) operated with the traditional cage and the overwhelming majority of hen places wasalso in such cages (98.5%). The average size of unit on the conventional cage system comes 47,772hens per holding. The average size of the very limited number of holdings with alternative systems islarger for “free range” system (6,429 hens) than for hens held on organic farms (3,433 hens). Thebarn system has an average size of 5,560 hens.274
