Chapter Five: Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> in Matters of Creed (al- 'aqd'id) and Religion<br />

[al-jathfyah (45): 24]<br />

Others believed in the Creator, but denied messengers and resurrection,<br />

and others claimed angels to be Allah's daughters. Others<br />

were swayed to Judaism and Zoroastrianism, such as the tribe of<br />

Tamim.<br />

Among those who used to believe in the Creator, Genesis, resurrection,<br />

reward and punishment were 'Abdu'l-Muttalib <strong>Ibn</strong> Hashim,<br />

Zayd <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Amr <strong>Ibn</strong> Nufayl, Quss <strong>Ibn</strong> Sa'idah, and 'Amir <strong>Ibn</strong> al­<br />

Zarib.<br />

'Abdu'l-Muttalib noticed that there was one oppressor who was<br />

not stricken <strong>by</strong> a punishment, so he concluded: By Allah there must<br />

be a life after this life where the righteous will be rewarded and the<br />

evildoers punished.<br />

Among those believers was Zuhayr <strong>Ibn</strong> AbI Sulma. He said (in<br />

poetry):<br />

Put off; yet recorded in writing and hoarded<br />

For day of Accounting, or straightway rewarded<br />

Who afterward became Muslims. Among them was al-Qalammus<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Umayyah al-KinanI, who used to preach in front of al-Ka'bah,<br />

and Arabs did not used to leave Makkah to head home until he gave<br />

his speech. One day he said: "O Arabs, obey my advice and you will<br />

succeed. I know that Allah is not happy about your worship of<br />

numerous idols. He is the Lord of these idols and wishes to be<br />

\\Orshipped alone." Upon hearing this, Arabs abandoned him that<br />

year and did not listen to his advice.<br />

Arabs had another misconception. <strong>The</strong>y believed that if they tied<br />

a horse next to a dead person's grave until the horse died, then he<br />
