Sabr. patience, steadfastness.<br />

StUid adh-Dharri'i: ftqb. Blocking the Means.<br />

Sabi(!. healthy, sound, authentic, correct. A l:iadith that has met the<br />

criteria of authenticity and can be used as a legal proof.<br />

Sa/rib. ftqh: the second pillar of Islam, the prayer.<br />

Salaf. predecessors, commonly employed to refer to the first three<br />

generations of Muslims.<br />

Sawm. ftqb. fasting, one of the pillars of Islam.<br />

Sidq: truthfulness, the conformity of the inner to the outer such that<br />

the deeds and statements of the person do not belie his beliefs<br />

and vice-versa. $idq is the foundation of faith and results in peace<br />

of mind, lying is the foundation of hypocrisy and results in doubt<br />

and suspicion, and this is why the two can never co-exist without<br />

being at odds with each other. al-Junayd was asked as to<br />

whether fidq and ikhlrif were the same or different and he replied,<br />

'<strong>The</strong>y are different, fidq is the root and ikhlrif is the branch.<br />

Sidq is the foundation of everything and ikhlrif only comes into<br />

play once one commences an action. Actions are only acceptable<br />

when they combine both.' <strong>The</strong> one who has true fidq will<br />

be free of self-conceit.<br />

Shaghafab. crazed passion.<br />

Shahridah: testification, witness. <strong>The</strong> declaration that none has the<br />

right to be worshipped save Allah and that Mul:i.ammad (;i) is<br />

the Messenger of Allah.<br />

Shahwri: carnal lusts.<br />

Shad·ab. divine Islamic law as ordained <strong>by</strong> Allah.<br />

Sharik: partner, associate.<br />

Shq_ykb. old man. ftqb. learned person, scholar. fiift: a guide along the<br />

spiritual path.<br />

Shq_yfrin: Satan, Iblis, a devil.<br />

Shirk: association, technically referring to directing a right that is due<br />

to Allah Alone to another object of creation, either completely<br />

or partially. It can be major (removing a person from the fold of<br />
