<strong>The</strong> taste for music has got so firmly fixed in the hearts of some<br />

of them that they prefer it to recitation of the Qur'an, and it works<br />

on their feelings more than the Qur'an.This is because of the dominance<br />

of secret passion, the sway of natural inclination, though such<br />

persons think otherwise.<br />

Abu «Abdu'l-Ral:iman al-Sulami said: I went to Marv in the lifetime<br />

of Abu Sahl al-Su'luki, who before my arrival had held on Friday<br />

mornings meetings for the study of the Qur'an and readings of<br />

the whole Book. I found when I arrived that he had put an end to<br />

these meetings and instituted a meeting for singing <strong>by</strong> <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Fargharu<br />

at that time. I was displeased there at, and kept saying that he had<br />

substituted a singing session for a Qur'an-reading. He asked me one<br />

day what people were saying. I replied: <strong>The</strong>y are saying that the reading<br />

of Qur'an has been stopped and a singing session substituted.<br />

He replied: He who questions his teacher will never succeed!.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se are the callers for Sufism; they require that a student surrender<br />

to his teacher completely! We should surrender to no human<br />

because we ought to be controlled <strong>by</strong> religion and sound intellect,<br />

unlike animals controlled <strong>by</strong> the whip.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ruling of Singing from the Perspective<br />

of the $iljis<br />

Some $Ufis claimed that certain types of people must be encouraged<br />

to listen to songs inspite of songs being considered <strong>by</strong> some to<br />

be a sin, and <strong>by</strong> others to be disliked.<br />

Abu 'Ali al-Daqqaq said: Listening (to music) is forbidden to the<br />
