Chapter Eleven: <strong>The</strong> Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> ef the $iijis<br />

(rat;lzjAlkihu 'anhu): You resemble me in my creation and my manners,<br />

so ]afar also did !Ja;l, then the Prophet (;I) told Za yd (ratf,ryAJ/dhu<br />

'anhu): You are our brother and freedman, so Zayd did pcyl.212<br />

Others cited the A<strong>by</strong>ssinians did zefn (will be explained shortly)<br />

while the Prophet (;I) was watching.<br />

In response I say: As for !Jaji, it is a form of walking that is performed<br />

at the times of joy. How is this related to dancing (al-raq!)?!<br />

Also the zefn that A<strong>by</strong>ssinians used to do was a way of walking<br />

when meeting an enemy.<br />

Abu 'Abdu'l-Ral:iman al-SulamI cited another incident as proof<br />

for dancing. He said: Sa'Id <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Musayyab, passing through one of<br />

the streets of Makkah, heard al-Akhqar al-I:Iadda' singing the following<br />

lines in the house of al-'A <strong>Ibn</strong> Wa'il:<br />

Her stomach was fragrant with scent<br />

She was with maidens all perfumed there went;<br />

When the man of Numayr with his caravan they describe<br />

Unwilling to meet him they all turned aside.<br />

So Sa'Id struck the ground with his feet for a while, and said: 'fhis<br />

is enjoyable to hear. <strong>The</strong>y used to tell poetry to Sa'Id frequently.<br />

<strong>The</strong> chain of transmitters of this tradition is broken and obscure,<br />

and that it is not to be believed of <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Musayyab, neither are the<br />

verses his; he was too dignified for such a performance. <strong>The</strong> verses<br />

are well-known to belong to the poet Mul:iammad <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Abdullah al­<br />
