Chapter Five: Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> in Matters of Creed (al-'aqa'id) and Religion<br />

<strong>The</strong> Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of Zoroastrians (al-majus)<br />

Ya}:iya <strong>Ibn</strong> Bishr al-NahawandI said: <strong>The</strong> first Zoroastrian king<br />

was Komorth, then came many who claimed to be Prophets including<br />

Zaradusht, he was the most famous of them.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y claimed that the lord was a spiritual being who appeared<br />

suddenly, and with his appearance purely spiritual beings appeared<br />

as well. When this happened the lord thought to himself: No one<br />

else could have created these beings. From this thought developed<br />

a darkness because it entailed the denial of others' abilities. So this<br />

darkness began to battle Him.<br />

Zaradusht prescribed fire worship, as well as praying to the sun<br />

because it was the owner of the world, as they claimed, the bringer<br />

of day, the eliminator of night, the reviver of plants and animals,<br />

and the generator of heat.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y never buried their deceased out of respect to Earth because<br />

all living things grew from it. <strong>The</strong>y also never used water for bathing<br />

out of respect to it, the livelihood of all things. <strong>The</strong>y utilized<br />

cow urine and never spat in it.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y considered it forbidden to kill or slaughter animals, and they<br />

used to wash their faces with cow urine in order to gain blessings.<br />

In addition, they considered it permissible for a man to have relations<br />

with his mother on the basis that a son was most worthy of<br />

fulfilling his mother's sexual urges. And whenever a man died then<br />

his son took over his widow. <strong>The</strong>y also allowed a man to marry one<br />

hundred or one thousand women. And when a women used to<br />

perform ablution after her monthly period, she would go to the tern-<br />
