Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> in Matters of Creed<br />

Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of the Sophists (al-Sii.ftstd'!Jyah)<br />

<strong>The</strong>y are called Sophists in attribution to a man <strong>by</strong> the name<br />

"Suphestti". <strong>The</strong>y claimed that things had no reality, and that what we<br />

observe may or may not be as we observe them. Scholars have responded<br />

to this argument <strong>by</strong> saying:<br />

Does this argument of yours have a reality or doesn't it? If you<br />

answer negatively, then how could you advocate that which has no<br />

reality?! You would be calling others not to accept your opinion. If<br />

you answer positively, then you have abandoned your teachings.<br />

Abu Mul).ammad al-I:Iasan <strong>Ibn</strong> Miisa al-Nubakhti mentioned their<br />

teachings in his book "al-Ard wa' 1-Drytintit" (Opinions and Religions).<br />

He said: "I saw many Mutakallimin (practitioners of deductive reasoning)<br />

erring in dealing with Sophists. This is because they attempted<br />

to debate and argue with them. <strong>The</strong>y aimed at refuting them <strong>by</strong> ar-<br />
