Chapter Nine: Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of the Worshipers in their devotions<br />

Do not be surprised of our advice against doing these things. It is<br />

the religion that forbids, not we.<br />

Al;imad <strong>Ibn</strong> Ianbal (raef!JA.Udhu 'anhu) was told: <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Mubarak<br />

said such and such. He replied: <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Mubarak did not come down<br />

from heaven (i.e. he was not infallible).<br />

And he was told once: Ibrahim <strong>Ibn</strong> Adham said: ... so he replied:<br />

You have come to me with the side roads. Stick to the main road.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ruling of Islam must not be abandoned for the sake of any<br />

person. <strong>The</strong> religion is most important and it is possible for people<br />

to err, or that they become unaware of some l;iadith.<br />

Iblis deceived some of those who perform prayer in another way.<br />

You hear them say: Al-pamdu ... al-pamdu.This repetition is not consistent<br />

with the proper etiquettes of prayer.<br />

And Iblis may cause a person to overstress the Shaddah. Sometimes<br />

people stress the letter "J)hdef" of the word "al-Maghefub" too<br />

much to the point of discharging some saliva[ All that is required is<br />

the proper pronunciation of each letters.<br />

Iblis causes these people to go beyond this requirement, and occupies<br />

them with pronunciation instead of comprehension of the<br />

meanings being read.<br />

'Uthman <strong>Ibn</strong> Abi al-'A said: <strong>The</strong> devil comes between me and my<br />

prayers and recitation, confusing me therein. <strong>The</strong> Messenger of Allah<br />

(fi) said: "That is a devil called khinzab. If he affects you, then seek<br />

refuge in Allah from him and (dry) spittle to your left three times."<br />

He [the companion] said: "I did that and Allah took him away from<br />
