<strong>AL</strong>-SHAFI'!: Mul:iammad <strong>Ibn</strong> Idrees <strong>Ibn</strong> al-'Abbas <strong>Ibn</strong> Shafi'! al­<br />

Hashimi al-Qurashi, Abu 'Abdullah, the Mujaddid of his era and<br />

one of the great <strong>Imam</strong>s of this nation. He died in the year 204 H.<br />

SHAYT AN: Also called Iblis. He is a Jinn and the enemy of mankind,<br />

devoted to leading them astray in any way that he can. <strong>The</strong><br />

word Shaytan is derived from the verb shatana which means to<br />

be distant, and indeed Shaytan is distant from all good.<br />

<strong>AL</strong>-SHA'Bi: 'Amir <strong>Ibn</strong> Shara}:iil al-Sha'bi al-I:Iumayri, Abu 'Amr,<br />

the I:Iafi?, Legal Jurist and poet. He died in the year 103H.<br />

SUFYAN <strong>AL</strong>-THAWRi: bin Sa'id <strong>Ibn</strong> Masruq, Abu 'Abdullah al­<br />

ThawrI, one of the great <strong>Imam</strong>s and worshippers of this nation.<br />

He was titled '<strong>The</strong> Leaderef Believers in lf adith ' and was well versed<br />

in tefsir. He was the teacher of Abu I:Ianifah and Malik amongst<br />

others and died in the year 161H.<br />

T<strong>AL</strong>I:IAH: <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Ubaydullah <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Uthman <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Amr al-QurashI, Abu<br />

Mul:iammad, one of the ten promised Paradise. He witnessed<br />

Upud and the following battles. He died in the year 36H.<br />

T <strong>AL</strong>I:IAH <strong>AL</strong>-ASADi: <strong>Ibn</strong> Khuwaylid <strong>Ibn</strong> Nawfal. He initially accepted<br />

Islam at the hands of the Prophet (;i) and then apostated,<br />

claiming Prophethood for himself. Many of the Arabs followed<br />

him and Abu Bakr sent Khalid <strong>Ibn</strong> Walid to him who fought<br />

him. Tal}:iah was defeated and fled to Syria where he eventually<br />

accepted Islam again. It is said that he was martyred at Nahawund<br />

in the year 21H.<br />

<strong>AL</strong>-T<strong>AL</strong>MASANi: Sulayman <strong>Ibn</strong> 'AlI <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Abdullah <strong>Ibn</strong> 'AlI, the<br />

$iifts poet who authored various works on language, manners<br />

and Usii/. He was a follower of the way of <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Arabi and was<br />
