Biographical Notes<br />

'Abdullah. He was a poet and lecturer and died in the year 65H.<br />

PHILIP THE MACEDONIAN: 383-336BC. A great soldier and<br />

brutal king who was responsible for turning the Macedonian<br />

army into the greatest fighting force of its time.<br />

PLATO: 427-347BC. He studied under Cratylus and was a close<br />

friend of Socrates. Later he studied mathematics under the students<br />

of Pythagoras and came to believe that mathematics was<br />

the highest possible expression of thought. At about 387BC he<br />

founded his Academy, which was a school devoted to philosophy<br />

and the physical sciences.<br />

PYTHAGORAS: 569-475BC. Born in Greece, he was known for<br />

mathematics and an astronomer. He founded a school called<br />

the Semicircle wherein political discussions were held, and he<br />

himself taught philosophy in a cave which he used as a base for<br />

his research into mathematics. He later moved to Italy and<br />

founded another school there devoted to philosophy.<br />

QATADAH: <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Nu'man <strong>Ibn</strong> Zayd al-Anari al-Awsi, Abu 'Amr,<br />

he witnessed the pledge of 'Uqbah, Badr and every other battle<br />

that the Prophet (;i) fought. He died in the year 23H.<br />

<strong>AL</strong>-QUSHA YRf: 'Abdul-Karim lbn Hawizin al-Qushayri, a disciple<br />

of Abu 'Ali al-Daqqaq (d. 405/1014) in $sm, is famous for his<br />

al-Risa/ah, which is the most authentic and comprehensive introduction<br />

to .)s practices, experiences and concepts as developed<br />

<strong>by</strong> the early $s.<br />

SA'iD IBN <strong>AL</strong>-MUSAYYAB: <strong>Ibn</strong> I;Iazn, Abu Mul).ammad. He excelled<br />

in l).adith and ftqh, and was known for his worship and<br />

asceticism. He was one of the 'Seven Legal Jurists' of Madinah<br />
