Chapter Two: Condemning bid' ah (innovation) and mubtadlin (innovators)<br />

'anhum) to compile the Qur'an, he responded: How could you do<br />

something that Allah's Messenger never did?!<br />

50) 'Abdullah <strong>Ibn</strong> AbI Salamah said: 'Sa'd <strong>Ibn</strong> Malik heard a man<br />

saying: 'I am answering your call 0 Lord of the ways of ascent.<br />

So Sa'd commented: We did not used to say this at the<br />

time of Allah's Messenger."50<br />

51) Abu'l-Bukhturl said: 'A man told 'Abdullah ibnMas'ud that a<br />

group of people used to gather in the magid after sunset, and<br />

one of them says: 'Say AllrihuAkbar this many times, say:<br />

'S ubflrin Allah this many times, say: 'Al-If amdu Ii Allah this many<br />

times. <strong>Ibn</strong> Mas'ud replied: 'Next time you see them doing this<br />

let me know of their gathering.' So he came to their gathering<br />

and when he heard what they were saying, he stood up -and<br />

he was a hot tempered man - and said: 'I am 'Abdullah <strong>Ibn</strong><br />

Mas'ud, <strong>by</strong> the only One worthy of worship, you have come<br />

up with a bid' ah out of transgression, and you (seem to think)<br />

that you have excelled over MuJ:iammad's (:i) Companions in<br />

knowledge.' 'Amr <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Utbah replied: 'I seek Allah's<br />

forgiveness.' <strong>Ibn</strong> Mas'ud said: 'Stick to the pathway (the<br />

Sunnah). If you go right or left you will become grievously<br />

misguided.'51<br />

52) MuJ:iammad <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Awn said: 'We were visiting with Ibrahim<br />

Al-Nakha'I when a man came saying: 'Abu 'Imran! Pray to<br />

Allah to cure my illness. We noticed that he (Ibrahim) disliked<br />

this request very much, to the point that we could tell this<br />

from his appearance. He then talked about the Sunnah, and<br />

encouraged adherence to it, and gave examples of what pea-<br />
