Section Two<br />

Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of the Worshipers (al- 'Ubbcid)<br />

Subtle acts of showing off are used the most <strong>by</strong> Iblis to deceive<br />

worshipers. Thin postures, pale faces, messy hair, and soft voices<br />

are all obvious acts of showing off. So is showing off in charity and<br />

tn prayers.<br />

We ref er to the Prophetic saying: "Indeed actions are according to<br />

intentions."143 When Allah's Face is not sought <strong>by</strong> an action, then it<br />

will not be accepted.<br />

Malik <strong>Ibn</strong> Dinar said: Tell those who are not sincere: do not tire<br />

yourself!<br />

A believer only seeks Allah's pleasure <strong>by</strong> his actions; however, he<br />

may still be subject to subtly showing off.<br />

Yusuf <strong>Ibn</strong> As bat said: Learn the right actions from wrong actions.<br />

It took me twenty-two years to do so.<br />

It is out of fear of showing off that righteous people concealed<br />

their actions, and pretended to do the opposite of what they were<br />

doing. <strong>Ibn</strong> Sirin used to laugh during the day and cry at night.<br />

And when <strong>Ibn</strong> Adham used to get sick he used to serve food that<br />

only healthy people ate.<br />

Wahb <strong>Ibn</strong> Munabbih said that there used to be a very pious man<br />

who used to express his concern about showing off because of the<br />
