benefits such as knowledge, belief and action. <strong>The</strong> Legislator is like<br />

a doctor; he knows what is best for the patient and orders him accordingly.<br />

Section Twelve<br />

Regarding Allah's Vast Mercy<br />

<strong>The</strong> third doubtful matter: they said: Allah's mercy is vast, and it will<br />

surely encompass us. So there is no sense in depriving ourselves<br />

from pleasures.<br />

<strong>The</strong> response is similar to that of the first argument. This saying implies<br />

rejecting that which Prophets came with. It belittles all the warnings<br />

and punishment mentioned (in Qur'an and Sunnah).<br />

Allah described himself to be merciful, but He also described himself<br />

to be of severe punishment. We see how Prophets and righteous<br />

people were tested with sickness and hunger and how they<br />

were held accountable for the errors they committed.<br />

In fact, on Judgment Day both Khalilallah [Ibrahim ('alayhis-salam)]<br />

and Kali mullah [Musa ('altfYhis-salam)] will say: "Myself! M yself!"272<br />

And 'Umar (rat/iJAllahu 'anhu) used to say: "Woe to 'Umar if he is<br />

not forgiven."<br />

Know that he who hopes for mercy ought to do things that bring<br />

it, including repenting from sin. He who hopes to harvest, should<br />

plant. Allah said:<br />
